Did you pay for picking, delivery and installation with them, purple? See, Ikea looks great in the catalogue but their actual shops drive me into an instant rage.

We did ours from ikea with appliances for under 2k

Ikea - large kitchen, all new mid range integrated appliances, solid oak work tops £6k fully installed.

Not B&Q - want 10k for an installed kitchen, IT range. I work in an Estate Agent that has a trade account with Howden and he reckons he could do it all for me for 5k.

I would first decide which appliances you want build in if at all
look at standard size of cupboards and see how many would fit in - anything what's not standard would cost you at least 50% more

£3k for the kitchen, £800 to the installer, £2k for the appliances from Southern Domestics (all graded stock - saved hundreds of pounds)

use the planner tool and then print out the product list and either order for delivery or go and collect

I've mentioned them on here before - I promise I don't work for them - but try 3D kitchens - I think the link is .net. They supply units already assembled and have endless permutations of cabinets and finishes. I thought their customer service was excellent (especially for a kitchen supplier); one of our doors was damaged and they could have argued that the fitter did it, but they exchanged it immediately. You need your own fitters, though.

Wren - we have been very pleased with ours.

sorry - clicked too soon, I THINK ours was £2k for the kitchen including the extractor hood thingy, about £2 for installation with their fitters, we got the cooker and fridge separately. we did it during one of their sales though so I think it would normally be double that but they have a lot of sales. quality is good, we have had ours over 2 years now with no problems, soft close, looks good, lots of choice.

We went for Howdens but I think the trick it to get quotes from a few places as someone else said. Benchmark prices of any particular firm are hard to judge and offers seem to vary between stores for Howdens (we got a great special for our units available at a single branch).

If you need fancy corner units (carousels etc), sinks, taps, appliances, I'd look separately from your main supplier as many kitchen firms make their mark-ups on these. We bought generic carousels that fit with Howdens kitchens for 1/3 of the Howdens price, and got cheaper and better sinks, taps sinks online. For appliances we got a nice local firm to quote us for all of them, and they got them cheaper than any big store.

Basically the more leg work you put in, the better deal, as ever....

Ikea! But if you want to do the legwork for your own piece of mind,
Decide what appliances you want and research the prices and work backwards from that. My rough breakdown for a large kitchen and separate utility room :

4k kitchen units and laminate worktop for utility room from ikea
3k quartz kitchen worktops installed by separate supplier/contractor
6k appliances sourced separately from various places to get the best prices including sinks, taps, boiling water tap, extractor hood, domino Hobs, double oven, dishwasher, wine cabinet, American fridge freezer and water softener.

I was very particular about what I want - be aware that howdens only offer a rather limited and basic/economy range of appliances. Pan drawers seem to be expensive so i have practically all pan drawer units from ikea! All other kitchen quotes were did not come close and mainly comprised of basic shelving units with 2 sets of pan drawers so we decided it was worth the hassle of a few journeys to save a few thousand pounds!

Excludes electrics, plumbing, flooring, tiling, Under cabinet led lighting, customised splash back.

We've gone for DIY kitchens - the second cheapest on the EVO link, after EVO. We didn't look at Howdens as it seems you can't get a price without having chosen a joiner. DIY kitchens also do a wide range of sizes and combinations, and can even make some custom alterations to their standard sizes (we've had slightly deeper wall units).

The units are currently sitting in boxes in our dining room so I can't yet comment on what they're like.

I think their prices for other stuff are good too. We just bought units, but if we'd got our act together and chosen our sink in time we could have got it cheaper from DIY kitchens.

I do make overs for kitchens and it works out much cheaper. I cover 60 mile radius of Ascot and always happy to come and quote and show all the possibilities. Howdens and Benchmarx are trade only and the cheap end in quality. [email protected]
