Local firms, don't bother with the big national firms - high pressure time-wasters. Have any neighbours had theirs done? Ask for recommendations.

We went with a local firm - gave us a good discount on payment up front (big firms claim to give you interest free credit, but it's a lie, if you pay cash up front, it can be MASSES cheaper). I particularly didn't go with one big firm, because he insisted that I call my husband to check when I told him that we were going to go with a different supplier. My husband who wouldn't know double glazing if it smacked him in the face. My husband who isn't allowed to touch my tools. That one.

Brilliant thanks guys! I heard about the national firms, I wouldnt be great in that kind of situation - I crack under pressure, some of them sound really nasty. All after the money it seems.

Good idea ShatnersBassoon, I shall definitely ask around. Don't know why I didn't think of that before. It's always the most obvious!

Wow MummytoMog how rude of him, what an arse!

I browsed the net and found this site:www.doubleglazingpricesnow.co.uk/

It gave me an online quote which was pretty cool.

They say they can put you in touch with local firms, I thought it was worth a go but I had to fill in my details which to be honest I was a bit apprehensive about...

I shall keep you guys posted :-)

Update!

I got a call (which I was expecting as they asked for my details) buttt they were actually really lovely. I don't think they are a company themselves but they confirmed the details I gave.

I'm always quite suspicious of sites that ask for your details like your number and stuff but so far i've only had three calls from local companies. Which I thought was quite good!

Saved me some time at least.

I'm still going to ask around etc but having some quotes won't hurt.

They are coming round to give quotes this week so fingerscrossed. Wish me luck!

you can also try:

www.fensa.org.uk/

you will need a certificate from them for the windows anyway.

Joey8 · 15/07/2013 11:52

Ooh ok, I think the suppliers are registered with them anyway so I've been told I won't need to do anything like that. But I shall def double check, thanks specialsubject :-)

Get lots of quotes in. Leave it 3 months and they will ring you back with a much discounted price.

Joey8 · 15/07/2013 12:32

Ahh good thinking! But couldn't the prices potentially go up? I guess thats the risk with these things.

I shall wait and see what the prices they quote me are like first I think. But yes definitely agree, lots of quotes so I can compare :-)

and like all big things, prepare to become an expert yourself. (sighs at memory of big, reliable, quality checked double glazing company who put the windows in with a crucial bit missing....)

Hey all :-)

Another update!

Had all my quotes in. I think I was very lucky as the people were really lovely. Very professional so as far as I can tell they weren't dodgy! But I'm not naive enough to believe everything they say, so I will definitely will checking up on them.

I was fairly happy with the prices they gave me, to be honest I wasn't expecting anything cheaper so it was a nice surprise with what we got quoted.

My husband was with me and he was impressed with the quotes too, lets just say he wasn't expecting me to do a good job so muahaha! Although I don't blame him I can be rather ditzy sometimes!

Anyway, the website www.doubleglazingpricesnow.co.uk gave me a price of around £1100 for 4 windows and 2 of the quotes I received were just under which we thought was good.

I think because we changed the styles a little which each quote this effected the price but it all seemed pretty fair to me.

Oooh I'm glad I discovered this thread. That website was exactly what I was after thanks Joey :-)

Has anyone tried www.scotlandupvc.com? I think they just cover Scotland so not sure if anyone here might of tried them but a friend recommended them to me and wanted to know if they are any good?
