Who do we need to speak to get ideas for knocking through walls etc? Builders? Architects?

Our house has two old extensions on the back - the kitchen and the 'morning room'. The kitchen leads off the playroom. We're considering knocking down the wall between the kitchen and the playroom to create one large L-shaped room.

We've got a trusted family friend builder coming over to see it and we hope he can give us some ideas but who else can we speak to? Everyone tells me to get loads of people over to look and pinch bits from all their suggestions until we know what we want.... But who do we speak to? Will architects and builders be happy to give us advice if we call with our vague idea? I worry they think we'd be time wasters or a pain in the rectum...

If you have a "trusted family friend builder" you are in a far better position than many people!

See what he says and let us know how you get on.

The builder will be able to give general advice but should also be able to recommend a structural engineer who will advise on whether or not the walls can be knocked down, what structural support will need to be put in place etc.

Thanks. Our builder is my dads best friend, he specialises in loft conversions and extensions but I suspect has seen enough kitchen diners to advise. We took him on viewings when we were house hunting to see what the potential was... Ironically we didn't bring anyone with us for this house as we loved it so much and could just see the potential anyway well we think so He'll be over at lunchtime so I'll report back!
