Anyone else painted one side of the hallway/stairs dark and the other light?

We have a mid sized Victorian terrace hallway with a victorian tiled floor. Having tested nearly every grey going and found them too blue/purple etc and also not being able to find a grey carpet that didn't look dirty, we have now had a change of heart and think we are going to go for white or an off white (still haven't found a shade I like that isnt yellow based) and a neutral carpet as the landing at the back of the house is v dark. BUT I would like some colour and am thinking of painting the left hand wall as you walk into the house plus up the stairs on that side a dark colour - maybe Downpipe FB? Basically I think a pale wall will be covered in filthy fingerprints and a different coloured wall will add more interest. Has anyone done this, did it look shit? Will Downpipe be too dark (should I go for more of a teal or navy) - have navy in the sitting room however....I really can't make up my mind about this blooming hallwAy...

In my last house (recently moved) semi detached London Edwardian, I painted the spine wall in the hall ( the wall where the houses join) little green Lead Colour ( grey but not as dark are Downpipe) and the rest of the wall, stairs etc were All White F &B.
It went right up to the third floor and it looked great, it brought drama and colour without making it dark ( my house was dark on the ground floor getting lighter as it went up).
I thought it was lovely and would do that type of thing again.

I've done a very dark olive green on the one wall going up the stairs, with a neutral light grey/beige on all the others.

Looks great (I think).

Yes. everyone thought i was mad when i first said i was doing this with my first house 14 years ago.. But looked great and have done various combos every since Grin Currently have one side cream, and the other a graduation of blue, ending with a corner of the ceiling a very dark blue... But i also like painting ceilings.
