What age is ok for bunk beds?

The recommended age for the top bunk is 6. I am swapping rooms with DD2 and DD3 (5 and 3 in August) and would like to buy them bunk beds for saving space.

Is 5 ok or should I wait until next year?

It probably depends on your child. Mine is a right fidget and occasionally sleepwalks (as does his dad) so bunk/cabin beds are a no-no forever. If however you have a confident child who sleeps well, doesn't roll out of bed/fidget too much or sleepwalk then you are probably fine at 5, however watch out for the 3yo climbing up to play.

Not that it makes a huge difference but the bunk beds are lower than normal, 139cm I think.

DD2 doesn't fall out of bed or sleep walk but she doesn't still get into bed with me some nights.

They are both still in cots beds and there isn't any room for full size beds.

My issue in the past was the crazy younger sister who I knew would want to be up there too (aged not yet 2). That was when we had to un-bunk the bunks.

OP is your DD3 likely to need to explore? If not I'd be OK with the 5 year old being up there.

I think we might make ours back into bunks this summer, my DDs are now 6 and 5.

I have a just turned 5 year old and a 3 year old in them. Seems fine to me.

Son went into the bottom bunk aged 2, daughter in the top aged 5. Daughter has managed very well with getting herself out of bed and down the ladder with no injuries in the middle of the night - dream wees, etc.

Mine have been in the since 5 and 3, the 3yo had the bottom bunk. They are now 6 and 4.5 and swap when they feel like it.

We have had no mishaps, they climb down in the night no problems.

DD3 is climber and that is a concern but I could stop her going in the room unless she is sleeping and she gets straight into bed with me in the morning.

my older ones were about 5 and 2.5 when we got bunkbeds. 5 year old was fine. we removed the ladder- meant 2.5 year couldnt climb up- 5 year old used to climb up the end of the bed to get in!

Bunk bed lover, Really love your post.
I shared a bunk bed with my brother and because I was the oldest brother I got the top bunk. We were aged 5 and 3 and there were no safety concerns. Unfortunately for my younger brother I occasionally peed the bed and the mattress was rather thin so he would get some drips rain down on him. C 'est la vie.
Some great bunk beds below!

My almost 3 year old has been sleeping on a mid-sleeper (about 1m high) for a while now with no problems.
