New house has a really naff name to disguise the fact that it is no. 13. New name or just use the number?

So, we just bought a house and it has an awful name. Being a bit dim it never occured to me that the house had a name as the previous owners didn't want to use the number, 13. A lot of houses on the road have names but I've always regarded it as being a bit pretentious. It's on a suburban road rather than a country lane.

Would living in number 13 bother you?

The number 13 lowers resale value, apparently.

So if other houses nearby have names and that is an option for you then I would consider a name. If you are the only house with a name not a number it may be a little obvious though!

I live at no. 13. It's the third no. 13 I've lived at. I've never thought twice about it and am very content in my life and consider myself lucky to be able to say that.

Dear god, how do such backward superstitions persist in modern times? Mind you, means certain houses are cheaper for those of us with a rational nature.

Minty82 · 24/06/2013 20:07

Only occurred to me halfway through reading the thread that I do live at number 13! Rented house that I'm not very attached to so the address clearly isn't instinctive yet. Superstition never crossed my mind, but I love the thought of Triskaidekaphobia House.

Me and DH always give our houses unofficial names. Our previous house was 'Casa De Fun Fun'.....at present we live in 'The Spider Barn'. Grin

Wouldn't bother me, I grew up living at number 13.

Justfornowitwilldo · 24/06/2013 20:15

As your family like him, how about Driscoll House?

FoundAChopinLizt · 24/06/2013 20:17

How about Baker's Dozen?

ZiaMaria · 24/06/2013 20:20

It's just a number, I'd just use 13.

Thanks everyone, I have been in packing hell all morning.

I think we'll go with the number, but between us it will be Triskaidekaphobia Towers!

I live 2 doors away from a house called Herzanmine.

Lived here as a child and remember wondering where on earth the name came from.Took a long time for the penny to drop!
