Gloss paint peeling?

All of a sudden, on the struts of the banister. I painted it about a year ago, why would it be peeling. Not near a radiator or anything.

My first guess is, not sanded, or an incompatible layer underneath.

How did you prepare and clean the surface before painting? What was the previous treatment? Did you use an oil or a water paint?

It was also gloss, it had yellowed with age. I didn't sand it or anything, just washed and dried it.

I suspect the yellowing wasn't age, just the colour of the wood. Did you prime it first?

I think you need to smooth it off with fine sandpaper, removing all the loose, peeling or flaking material, hoover and brush off the dust and wipe clean with white spirit, and repaint. White undercoat before the gloss will improve the finish.

The water-based paints do not yellow. They are not as durable but will not matter indoors if not prone to being knocked or kicked. They are IMO not as glossy. If using water-based, leave the white spirit at least a day to dry off first. You can get water-based white acrylic primer undercoat which is very quick dying and easy to smooth. Any bare wood must be primed.

The good thing about wood is you can always sand it back and start again.

I really need to get some cheap carpet for my stairs and hallway. I have 3 boys, so I need something hard wearing. Any suggestions? Also, if I want to buy the carpet online, any company and website recommendations? Thanks so much. :) Sara X

It was the lack of sanding of the previous coat that has resulted in the peeling - the new paint didn't have a slightly rough base to stick on. Make sure you sand in the directino of the grain.
