Letting house to family help

We are hoping to let our home when we move to a new location next year. OH would like to rent it to his parents as they would like to live in our property, though I have a bad feeling about it. In some ways I know it can be a benefit as they will look after things and we can visit etc, though I am thinking on the other side for example, if I ever wanted to move back in the house and they had to leave.

Can anybody give any help or advice about the matter that may help to make the right decision?

Many thanks.

I can see it would be easier if your parents-in-law are handy around the house, take care of properties etc and it would be a real advantage if you could stay there on trips back. The problems would be implementing rent rises and regaining possession - to name but two possible areas of conflict. I think a frank talk, a good contract (with perhaps longer than usual notice periods) and everything in writing might be the way forward.

Thanks for that, yes I agree making things very clear at the beginning and having a contract would be the best way forward. I guess it can be harder work having strangers in lots of ways, so trying to see the positives.

We have just today sold dh's house which we were letting to family (his brother). Never again! I have had a very stressful day sorting out the mess he left and dealing with peed off buyers. He always knew we were going to sell the property after a year, but it's definitely been complicated by the tenant being a family member. We found out he was subletting for more than his rent to us, thus effectively living rent free... Selling the house and having viewings etc was also stressful for all parties involved.

That said, dh didn't have much luck with a property management company for private lets either! Thank god it's sold now, is all I can say.

Sorry, not much help..
