extension/conservatory style on galley kitchen

I have an average sized terrace with a small galley kitchen, to the side is an outside paved area which doesnt really get used. Has anyone built a conservatory style extension making a kitchen/diner? if so was planning a problem and roughly how much did it cost?

Very interested in this as we're looking at properties like this - but I don't want a galley kitchen forever!

However...I think unless you can separate the conservatory off from the house (with walls and doors etc) it is an extension and requires planning permission/building regs sign off.
