The house we at looking to buy is near old landfill. You would never know as pretty field. Would you buy or pass?

How near is it?

I would ask questions about how the landfill is capped and if they have ventilation to get rid of the landfill gases, and how often it is checked. Check out the Loscoe disaster for more information, if it is managed properly I would have no problem.

Wouldn't touch with a barge pole. I worked as a district nurse on an estate that was built on land fill- it had a very very high rate of cancer, sadly even children and very young people were suffering with it. It was well published in the press at the time. I now work in an area where there are huge tv masts and it's the same issue again. People may say it's safe but personally I wouldn't take the risk.

You might also get issues with subsidence as the landfill rubbish rots and the land around it moves to fill the gap.

Sorry, I wouldn't be buying.

25 metres Hmm

But everyone seems to have been living nearby happily....

Will do a bit of research...

25 m is really close. I was going to say that we live near landfill and it has never bothered us but we are more than a mile from it!

Contact the local Council's contaminated land officer as they may have more information about the type of waste, age of landfill, monitoring carried out and any protection measures. This may help you make an informed choice about the risk. However, remember any future purchaser is likely to ask the same questions when you come to sell.
