We have a problem with the wall at the end of our garden. Trees on our side (now removed) had damaged it and now it needs to be replaced. Cost we think is going to be around £2000. It's our wall and our responsibility. I am concerned about the wall falling so it does need to be done.

Here's the problem - the wall is made from breeze blocks. Not great looking but it runs all the way around our garden not just at the back. Before we moved in our neighbours at the back built a brick facade their side, which is attached to our wall. If we replace our wall then this facade will come down as its not free standing. I really don't want to have to pay for it to be reinstated. From the neighbours side you can't see the state of the wall due to the brick facade.

Does anyone know what our legal and ethical positions are regarding this wall? I don't want to set up a war with our neighbours. But equally we can't justify the cost of reinstating their decoration of our wall.

Legally I can't help you but this forum may be able to.

From a practical point of view, have you talked to your neighbours about the fact that you're going to be replacing the fence?

No, not yet. Wanted to be armed with the facts and also thoughts about what's reasonable before we go around. We don't ever see them so it'll be a special trip.

Hopefully they hate the wall facade and would love a breeze block one instead.

can you just put a fence up? you don't have to replace like with like do you? or have a chat about something nice and cheap that you both like?

Personally I would replace the wall as you prefer and ask them to contribute if they want a brick façade. Or use a hedge or fence.
