Really dumb question - the bubble in a spirit level. If it goes to one side rather than stays in the centre is that the higher point or is it the lowest point?

Air floats, so it will go to the higher end

if you have it upside down, it will go to an end. If you have it upright and level, it will go to the middle. The vial is slightly curved.

to check for out-of-adjustment, after finding level, turn it round (right to left) each time and if true the bubble will still be central.
