About to start big extension project - who do I need to tell?

In about three weeks, builders are due to start work on a large two storey extension for our house. We will be moving out into a rental property for a few months. Some of our things (furniture, boxes of books/DVDs/CDs, excess toys, etc) will be stored at the house in sealed off rooms; valuables, paperwork and items needed for day to day living will be coming with us.

I'm wondering who I need to tell? Obviously the neighbours. Do I tell the mortgage company? Buildings insurance company? And do I need to get contents insurance for both the house and the rental?

Considering the size of the project I am feeling a little overwhelmed - new kitchens/bathrooms and a bit of painting have been my property development limit up until this point! Any help or tips would be very much appreciated!

tell your insurers, cover will only be provided if the property is not left unoccupied overnight for a certain period. On my policy it's 60 days, some insurers will want an additional premium for what they see as an increased risk of an overnight unoccupied property. As far as the rental property, yes you will need contents insurance for your own belongings but also your rental contract may require it to cover accidental damage to the landlords contents - you should check this.
I'm not sure about the mortgage company to be honest.

I assume you told local authority & have planning permission & building regs approval.
You also need an agreement with you neighbours if building close to the boundary/ close to their home - i forget exact details.
