Replacing a staircase - big (expensive) deal or trivial ?

The house we are looking has a fairly step flight of stairs, straight up from the hall way to the upstairs landing. The stairs could start earlier on in the hallway (iyswim) so the steepness could be reduced (at least, that's what I think!).

Is this a simple, off the peg thing or weeks of a carpenter's time ? And a ball park figure would be what ?

Not a big deal if the opening doesn't need changing. Less than a grand for a new staircase tweaked to fit your specification.

Not a big deal - I have turned the staircase around in two properties

Not a huge deal but very dusty! The staircase comes in one piece, it just needs to be fitted. I think we paid £3k, but that was to have it put into a new opening. If the same place it would be cheaper.

Not a big deal but of course cost depends on whether you are replacing it with a bog standard staircase or a fancy pants oak and glass one.

Get someone reputable to do it though, H has had calls from people saying "we got someone cheap to fit our (v.v. expensive) Oak staircase and they have really messed it up, can he sort it out?"

He's quite busy so not overly keen to sort out other peoples mistakes for already stressed cheapskates! Grin

I'm dealing with this at the moment, because I'm reversing stairs I need building regs. I need to comply with this:

  • A minimum going of 220mm
  • A maximum rise of 220mm
  • Pitch of no more than 42 degrees
And the hand rail needs to be a certain distance from the steps too.

I guess with something off the peg it will automatically comply anyway?
