The psychology behind your front door! what colour is yours? when you buy a house do you change it?

Touch wood (all things proceeding without hitch) we will be moving in to a house with a weak white old front door. The house is a very terrace. Not new build but not period. HOuses in the row of five kept well though. 'Mine' is the least loved at the moment. It is quite shabby inside but the first thing I want to do is replace the door which looks early 80s. It's white. I'm thinking a Red door! Just because. Would a Georgian door look doh! on a house built in 1980 (circa).

I read that red door in feng shui means welcome! I also read that there's an old scottish tradition that when you have paid off your mortgage you painted your front door red. That amused me. How funny to advertise your business.

The different colours meant different things. I'm not sure what white means, but I feel the urge to get rid of it. And there are plenty of things INSIDE the house that need to be refreshed. Not sure why I am so keen to put a new front door on the house ASAP

Can you go 'too grand' with the front door sometimes? I remember my mtoher laughing at a house with stone lions on the drive wayy pillars!..

Christabel, I think it was secret... well, known to those who needed to know as I understand it. The place I worked was set up by a Jewish man who survived the war & went on to help (in odd ways) other people in need, hence the yellow door.

We have just moved into a new house that had a pale turquoise front door with brass knobs...it has just had 2 coats of F&B Down Pipe and chrome knobs put on it and it looks a thousand times better. Mind you the surround is a purple stained glass really would you?? so we were limited in what to paint it. Our last house had a v pale beige colour front door with chrome knobs and looked great. Mind you that house was a nice brick colour and this new house is grey....

was it hard to get the knobs off?! i must look at 'down pipe' on line.

Nope very easy they just unscrewed and we made sure the new knob was big enough to cover the old holes even though we had filled them in.

Black - it signifies prosperity according to Feng Shui apparently.

Many years ago we had trouble selling our house. I painted the front door black and within a week, it sold at the asking price! Wink

That's interesting wundawoman. What colour was it before it was black, when it didn't sell?

It was blue. Whether the change to black made it more saleable, or its just a coincidence, who knows....??
But I do really like black front doors.

Thanks. that is interesting, I'll remember that for when I sell the house!
