Removals Quotes shocker

spotty26 · 16/05/2013 16:08

Two quotes for a 5 bed semi in SW London packing service and removals to Bedford.

One £7400 inc VAT and another £4400 inc VAT. I was shocked at the £4400 but am stunned by £7400... any thoughts please? Am I just out of touch with how much it costs?

Thanks!

I have seen cheaper quotes for similar on MN.
Is that packing absolutely everything from scratch? Them to bring packing materials, too?

spotty26 · 16/05/2013 16:30

Yes and then you give them back the boxes etc

We recently moved within Essex, approx 10 miles from former home. A h 4 bed house but added to that was the contents of my DP's 3 bed. We had the full packing service on top of removal. Cost was £750 removal only, and £1,000 including packing. That was a local company called Jeakins , not sure if they would quote for your area but I am horrified about the figures you are talking about!

spotty26 · 16/05/2013 17:14

Thanks Dippymother Glad I am not losing it.

I sort of thought £3k max because we have a lot of furniture and it was about £1600 to move from our flat to here 6 years ago. I thought double it... but I am so shocked by these figures.

We used F Smith and son (based in croydon but they travel). They moved us 20 miles or so but whole thing including full packing service and materials was about £1700 for a rammed-full 3 bed house including loads of attic stuff and extra furniture from another storage location. They were great. Your quotes sound truly eye-watering (unless all your bedrooms are forty foot square??!)

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 16/05/2013 17:15

Bloody hell, Spotty ... I'm about to need movers myself from SW London. Thanks for the warning!

Have you tried these guys?
www.cavendishandcountry.com/
I only ask because it is run by the brother a work colleague and several people here have used them fairly recently.

Aethelfleda · 16/05/2013 17:16

(oh and that included VAT, the base rate was £1000 and the other £500 was for the packing and extra pickup. They provided six extremely good-humoured chaps on the day and two the day before to pack).

LazyMonkeyButler · 16/05/2013 17:19

Shock We moved 22 months ago from a very full 2 bed flat, including rammed full loft space & rammed full garage to a house 5 miles away. We didn't have the packing service admittedly, and live nowhere near London (helpfully for you) but paid £300!!

A 5 bedroom house move with the same company would be around £450 (but you pack for yourself).

Hell, I'll come and pack for you for £2000! Grin

LazyMonkeyButler · 16/05/2013 17:21

Are you sure the £7400 wasn't a misprint? Confused

spotty26 · 16/05/2013 17:21

No, just under 2000sq ft so not a massive house but not titchy either. I do have a small rented garage around the corner too.

I have got three other people quoting next week and just did that removals hub thingy then about 5 people all rang me as I was serving dinner for the kids even though you are meant to get 6x email quotes within minutes...what a palaver. Had to tell them all in the nicest possible way to p1ss off and email me.

Why does everything cost so much in freaking London?

OP posts:
spotty26 · 16/05/2013 17:22

Ha, definitely not a misprint as they had it as Net, VAT gross etc.

Thanks for the Cavendish and Country tip. Maybe I should get Company no7 around too next week.

I had someone ask me over the phone how many DC I had, and gave me a quote based purely on that. Hmm

I used someone else.

I haven't moved in the last 5 years...4 bed house, and I wouldn't have paid over £1K to move within the same town.

Ask if moving on a day other than Friday will be cheaper.

lljkk · 16/05/2013 17:36

I think I was quoted £3k recently to move UK to USA, a single 20' container, and they would do most the packing.

spotty26 · 16/05/2013 17:38

Our day is a Thursday already! Do you think they just thought let's see what this silly woman will pay??

spotty26 · 16/05/2013 17:42

The inventory said we needed 90 cubic metres if that assists with the analysis of how extortionate it is!

They need a mask........ £7400 is daylight robbery!
Try Cross Country Carriers. Based in Crowthorne in Berkshire. They have moved us twice, Berkshire to Hertfordshire and back again and never charged more than £900. And that was full packing service and move for a two bed terrace including bicycles and a piano!

Christobel51 · 16/05/2013 18:55

Their website is www.crosscountrycarriers.co.uk and their phone number is 0118 978 6786

pinkje · 16/05/2013 19:27

Maybe they are in cahoots with each other so you'll settle for the more reasonable £4,400 quote.

Goodwordguide · 16/05/2013 21:23

We moved from SW London to Essex and used Les Hinks (www.hinksremovals.co.uk). For a 3 bed house full service eith packing etc would have cost £900, we paid £600 for without packing. And they were fantastic, would highly recommend them, they do travel.

wonkylegs · 17/05/2013 10:59

Ha ridiculous
Our quotes so far have been £1800, £1400, & £1000 for a very full 5bed house, 60miles and includes specialist removal of a piano, some huge artworks and about a billion large plants (I never thought about this when I bought them argh). I'm doing the packing but they are dismantling & reassembling the beds. Admittedly we're up north but moving from one expensive area to another.
I think you need to get some more quotes.
