Debenhams sofas - any good and is black leather too eighties-tastic tragic?

So...
Have a small-ish living room to decorate. Solid wooden floor.

I'm think of this paper possibly on two walls only.

I'd really like a corner sofa and have seen this sofa which looks really bargainous but am worried that black leather is more city boy batchelor pad than cosy family TV room...

I'd be more comfortable with brown leather but I don't think it would work with the wallpaper. Also the olive green looks nice but am worried it might be (a) a bit clashing or (b) very wrinkly. Have ordered a swatch anyway.

Any thoughts/previous experience good and bad with Debenhams furniture?

Thanks in advance

I love dandelion clocks but I think it will seriously date. That might not matter to you of course, it's important to have what you like and not just pick for others, but thought I'd mention it anyway. Have you looked at others in the similar ranges? There's some other 50s stuff I love. Don't know anything about sofas though. Although I can tell you I got mine from sofa sofa and am pleased with them.

thanks. you may have a point re the wallpaper so will have a think about that... In the meantime does anyone else have any views in the sofa/debenhams furniture in general???

I cant help, I posted looking for sofa advice too. Watching your thread with interest.

I have zero interior design flair so am a play it safe, keep it classic/undateable kind of person. Hence I have white walls, wooden floors and neutrals throughout. I think you would be better with brown sofa, think the black does not feel very "cosy". You say you'd prefer it..am a big believer in instinct!. Wallpaper is lovely, but it is very "everywhere" at the moment. It feels like the design all the window dressers etc are going to be replacing very soon. I would go for the brown sofa and find a different paper.

Black much more stylish than brown

FishfingersAreOK · 06/05/2013 15:04

See, told you I was rubbish Grin. Though I am probably biased against black as I had one in my first ever house....along with beech laminate floor and beech dining room furniture....twas back in the 90s though....

I think brown leather is nicer. Ive seen lovely battered brown leather sofas in country hotels, etc.

I think black is hard to pull off in a small room. I like the green myself! I'm not a wall paper person, but I think any wall paper dates really - you have to get something you quite like and accept that you'll be pulling it off again within a fairly short period of time (same with paint, which also need redoing periodically!).

Thanks for the feedback. Am now thinking maybe I should go with the brown sofa (will await the swatch though to see what the leather looks like) and change the wallpaper to this (again on 2 walls only). Maybe cream curtains and that should be quite cosy I think. Hmmm. I'm really not good with this decision making lark...

That wallpaper is nicer. The Sanderson one is really dated already imho.

PragmaticWench · 07/05/2013 13:02

The second wallpaper is really nicer, probably easier to live with in a small room, less busy iyswim.

Love the style of the sofa. Brown is warmer / cosier, black can feel quite cold. And is it for a young family? a brown leather sofa will still look good when a bit battered, so will age better, whereas (regardless of what you think of it) black needs to be kept in quite good nick imo. Brown also more forgiving in terms of colour matches, so will be easier to redecorate around.

I really like the olive green too!

and agree that the second wallpaper is better, I don't get the dandelion clock stuff, my mum loves it but I find it a bit, I dunno. naive? obvious? something. maybe it's just that it's everywhere.
