I thought I would go for eggshell but I've been told that gloss is making a revival? What are your thoughts?

thinking about it, it depends what colour?
black ,red ,racing green should be gloss
but if f&b watery colours they should be eggshell.

RooneyMara · 01/05/2013 11:01

I would have said gloss but then I used International exterior satin as it was in the sale, and it is BEAUTIFUL and the finish is superb. so I'm sticking with that! even if it is brown.

here

RooneyMara · 01/05/2013 11:03

eggshell is not good on doors really

LoveGigi · 01/05/2013 11:06

The colour I've chosen is Dix Blue by F&B. I've got a north facing recessed storm porch entrance to my Victorian brick house. So eggshell for this shade or gloss?

I'm all for eggshell internally (though not impressed with the matt paint for woodwork that's available) since its less glary, but I love to see a proper shiny gloss front door.

ouryve · 01/05/2013 11:08

Now I've seen that colour, I'm torn. That shade screams eggshell, LoveGigi.

RooneyMara · 01/05/2013 11:09

You mean Mumsnet blue yes? as in the colour of Olivia's posts Grin

RooneyMara · 01/05/2013 11:10

Oh no sorry, it's more the colour of my posts. hmm, ahem. Blush

I would still go for gloss. As long as it is quite a gentle gloss.

Yonihadtoask · 01/05/2013 11:11

MMmmm... Gloss I say.

Our front door is white, but is a matte paint.

I think any colours look better a bit shiney ;)

LoveGigi · 01/05/2013 11:17

For the people who have gloss, did you choose it because of it's appearance or practicality?

LoveGigi · 01/05/2013 11:23

Am I just a big fat cliche? Wink

Practically speaking gloss everytime. Matt gets grubby v v quickly and soon looks shit.
Looks beautiful for about 10 minutes.

LoveGigi · 01/05/2013 12:13

At a glance the consensus is sitting at around 80% for gloss versus 20% eggshell.

RooneyMara, thanks for the link.

Gloss. It's the law. Wink

PigletJohn · 01/05/2013 12:54

gloss

will not get so dirty, and will be easier to clean.

RooneyMara · 01/05/2013 14:12

I have to say my lovely satin door looks so nice about months in - its' been absolutely fine, it is on the protected side of the house though so gets no lashing rain etc.

It looks like someone has poured chocolate over it Smile Very fine and smooth finish.

RooneyMara · 01/05/2013 14:13

also very hardwearing - I have tried to chip the edges a good few times and only managed it once with a piece of furniture I think it was...

I think International paint is just super solid stuff iyswim. It wipes clean very easily too.

RooneyMara · 01/05/2013 14:14

6 months

JazzAnnNonMouse · 01/05/2013 17:14

But yours is a dark colour - I'm not sure a light colour would hold up so well if not gloss.

LoveGigi · 01/05/2013 17:32

I've ordered gloss!
