Best thing to get rid of mould in bathroom?

I've had a rather dull lovely time searching old threads about damp.

Lots of useful advice about extractor fans etc but I first of all want to get rid of the mould.

What is the best product to just get rid of the mold before I just start again being much more sensible about keeping the window open?

you can wipe or spray it with dilute bleach to kill it, and once dead it will scrub off more easily, but you will never be rid of it in a warm humid room.

Yes that's what I mean about planning to keep the window open pretty much all the time now.

But: could you explain a bit more about the bleach, scrubbing? Someone mentioned pure bleach in a spray bottle but would you recommend diluted?

Also, then what? Do i leave it for a few minutes or longer? Would I use a nail brush or something?

What about the seemingly unremovable black stains? mould? around the sealant above the shower tray?! Cillit et al have had no effect!

I use dettol mould and mildew remover. Spray it on and leave it for several hours to work.

Bleach is fairly toxic to get to the concentrations that actually kill mould. Undiluted tea tree or clove oil will kill mould, but it's quite hard to get rid of the spores completely, you need to keep reapplying. A dehumidifier also helps. If it's buried in grout or silicone you may need to replace that to completely remove it.

I second the HG mould spray - it's fab. Grot Buster (think it's by Domestos) is available from supermarkets and it's brilliant too.

We have mould on the ensuite ceiling, so I just wipe it with undiluted bleach on a cloth every so often. I did repaint it with anti-mould paint but it didn't keep it at bay.

HG mould spray is by far the best, but really does smell very strong, so spray the bathroom after everyone has finished in it. You will be amazed by the results and no scrubbing required. It also appears to inhibit the regrowth.

I don't think it's available from supermarkets, but Lakeland sell it.

ANother vote for HG. You can get it in B&Q, Homebase etc.

Ironically, I only have mould (the black blotchy kind) on the new mould-resistant sealant I added round my bath a few months ago because the original sealant strip was leaking. It's very annoying. I think I will need to scrape it all off again and fit another plastic sealant strip...

The HG spray turned our sealant back to white from that orange / pink mould colour you get. I'd give it a go before replacing (because I'm lazy - spray and walk away but vent the room as it drinks).

We had an amateurishly-regrouted shower in our last place (evidently not mould resistant), and a toothbrush dipped in bleach did great things. (save your old toothbrushes for this - they aren"t worth much afterwards!)

My private rented flat had terrible mould problem, just been sorted out & hopefully for good this time but Landlords handy man painted on neat bleach with a paint brush (less mess than cloth) then wiped or scrubbed if needed. That was left to dry overnight & a mould blocker painted over that, then normal paint. They have also fitted extractors to bathroom & kitchen which really helps in the bathroom where the entire window wall was covered in mould before. I have heard that once bleached off then gloss before normal emulsion is also a good blocker!!

emulsion does not adhere well to gloss.

An oil-based undercoat is better

but the extractor fan is best of all.

I've just bought and used some of the HG mould spray recommended up thread. Miracle stuff! It's cleared all the black patches in between mosaic tiles with no scrubbing, just a spray and rinse.

DH says thank you for saving him a couple of hours worth of regrouting.

Yay HG ! Its bloody amazing stuff but probably caustic as hell.... I almost enjoy cleaning the bathroom as I know the grout will be returned to white with no effort on my part.
