Painted shaker style kitchens - Higham, Devol etc.

I've had a quote from Higham and wondered if anyone has had both these companies quote. Is Devol cheaper than Higham? How did prices compare?

just want to add something here - when I started designing back in 1985 - English Rose was the manufacturer that was sold by the company I worked for ! they were really good back then - and if it's the same company - then they truly are established !
I was chatting with a Neptune dealer yesterday - and he said one of the good things about Neptune is they don't allow retailers to discount it over the Internet or over the phone - so if you are looking to haggle - then you would have to do it in person - in their showroom . if you wanted to be in a good position to haggle - consider having your own design done independently !

Rak5a - you're so right! A month down the line, I'm going for MDF lol... Currently DIY kitchens are the front runner, but will look into Evo kitchens too (all based on mumsnetting).

WookiesWife do you rate Neptune Kitchens? I'm just about to order one.

EastwickWitch - we looked round our local Neptune showroom and were really impressed with the quality. Unfortunately decided their style wouldn't quite fit with our 70s box of a house so are looking elsewhere but otherwise I'd go with them. Several friends are delighted with their Neptune furniture.

I am also really interested in a devol kitchen. I was out off by the fact that they never got back to me :(

brum, thank you. My kitchenitis has gone too far, I've looked at too many. Neptune seems to fit the bill but it's great to have some reassurance, I've only seen the showroom.

We have a barn conversions, I would like a hand painted Kitchen and corian or granite work tops, I am dreading the kitchenitis and research that will come, can you share estimates with me please?

always kitchinitis is a serious affliction. The symptoms include searching mums net, home magazines & other peoples homes for inspiration, watching house programmes only to look at the kitchen & building up a Pinterest board of (mostly US) style kitchens that would look wonderful in a Cape Cod Clapboard or a Sussex Manor House.

Treatment comes when you decide that only a Plain English kitchen hand built by elves with italian marble imported from Florence will do.
You then get the price & decide that Howdens or similar might be an alternative.

Loving the humour Eastwick, we have lots of scruffy units and a large Island at the moment, I am hoping to replace with less units and do without the island. I suspect I will need to pay the elves cash to save costs.

Hi - sorry for delayed answer Eastwick - well to answer your question about Neptune - I've designed quite a few - and they are pretty good ! I get a bit miffed that they don't openly tell you exactly where they are made - but that's another matter - the quality of product is good - the pricing is middle to high end- in short, I would buy one ! - faults to look out for: sometimes the painting can be mismatched - so look out for that and ask them to change what you are not happy with ! Also, some retailers check everything before it goes to site some don't - if only one or two pieces of your delivery looks re packaged - check these carefully incase it's a price someone else rejected !

Oneplan. I know where they're made, our architect insists on calling them 'Chinese Kitchens"..Thanks for the tip off about painting. I'm not keen on the colour that it comes in so will probably have it repainted (see my 100s of threads) a grey/blue colour with white marble style Silestone.
Rumour has it that Neptune are soon going to be offering an installation service with lifetime guarantee.

:-) Neptune are investing a great deal in getting their products out there - but as they retail through a network of independents - I guess it would be several installation teams from head office, as it were, that would undertake that, if they decided to go down that route ! I haven't seen any adverts for installation teams in any of the trade press - so it's possibly quite a long way off yet !

We had a quote from Neptune, Devol, Higham and Parlour Farm. We chose Parlour Farm for the service and because many of the features we wanted came standard with PF whereas other companies added additional charges. We had to work around chimney breasts and RSJs so PF designed special units which enabled us to maximise the space. PF was circa £4000 less expensive than our other quotes. We sourced our fridge freezer and range cooker but ordered everything else, from handles to dishwasher to granite through PF and they delivered on everything, even a few last minute requests. We are thrilled with the finished kitchen, the quality is excellent and it is beautiful. The fitter was efficient, detailed and very tidy which was an added bonus of the overall experience.

I've been looking for a new shaker style kitchen and neptune and devol kitchens both caught my eye. I liked the look of the neptune kitchens but was really disappointed when I found out their kitchens are actually made in China! thanks EastwickWitch for pointing that out!
devol make all of their kitchens in England, they can make cupboards in any bespoke sizes and when it comes down to the door fit and paint finish there's no comparison.

Yes, we liked Devol, Plain English and Neptune but like you we were put off by the made in China bit. We ended up going with Simon Benjamin as they can adjust the sizes. The cabinets were beautiful quality and hand painted and everyone we dealt with was really lovely and helpful. I was pleased with the price too which always helps!

this is an amazing thread and perfect timing for me. I am currently looking at these exact kitchens. We have building work that starts in January and so will need a whole new kitchen to go int he extension. I'm in love with the 1909 shaker kitchen painted in farrow and ball railings and ever since I've seen this, I've tried to replicate it for cheeper. I'm hoping that Devol will have a sale in the new year as they are the only ones that come anywhere near. We would need some bespoke stuff doing though but seeing your thread has made me think that perhaps we could mix and match, as you are, therefore saving some money. I don't know why I didn't think of this. I'm going to look into this right now.

I came across this thread last year when we were looking for a new shaker kitchen. After reading the posts we went to see Devol and I have to say, their showroom was excellent. The price was a bit high, we only have a small space and it felt like they didnt seem all that interested in us. All the same we were going to go with them when by chance my husband came across a small Leicester company called brookewood. We rang them up and they came out to see us within a couple of days and seemed really keen. We went with them and now have a lovely kitchen and less than devol were quoting. We are so happy we have had our utility done and my parents are having a kitchen made too. I hope this helps.

We are really keen on buying a DeVol shaker style kitchen, but would like to view one before purchasing! It's an 8 hour round trip to visit their showroom and difficult to get away at present. Does anyone have one in the Devon / Cornwall area that we could view? Also, did anyone else get charged £500 for delivery?

We have devol but unfortunately not in your area. They are fabulous though!
