Building a garden room (daughters bedroom)

Moving house and found the perfect one apart from the 2nd and 3rd bedroom being very small. 18 year old daughter likes the idea of a garden bedroom (removing, large, ugly workshop at the end of the garden). Does anyone have any ideas of cost for this? Would need to have at least heating and light. Thanks!

do you mean a hut in the garden? It will need planning permission if it is habitable.

You are not allowed to sleep overnight in a garden shed, or have a WC.

I imagine you will need Building Regulations as well, but have never seen anybody reach the second hurdle.

I converted a breeze block garage at the end of my garden into a bedroom with ensuite for my daughter. It already had electricity. Local council said planning wasn't required as long as it was for family use only.

It cost be about £10,000 three years ago. She loved it but although it was extremely well insulated the heating cost (oil filled electric radiator) has been astronomical - probably because she'd rather wear just a t-shirt and have the heating on full blast! Still worth doing and it's added more than it cost to do to the value of the house.

DP fitted a timer in a lockable box over the socket. She somehow managed to override the timer and melted the box when it over-heated!

We have a 'garden room' that the previous owners did. Converted the garage into an annex for an elderly relative. It is great to have for visitors, but it is expensive to heat. They did have to get planning permission. I expect it was called a garden room to get around any potential double council tax issues with a separate annex.

Our neighbour has a "garden room" that he has built in his garden, right against the boundary by the road. It's fully insulated, has a bedroom, living room, bathroom and kitchen, and he's renting it out. And apparently doesn't need planning permission because it's not a permanent structure. No, don't ask me how he got round that one, I have no idea.
