Hi all, my OH and I are looking to move away from Berkshire and I'm a bit worried as I've never been away from my family. We've found a place in Crewkerne, Somerset which he loves but I feel apprehensive about. I have a 6 year old daughter. She is not his but they have a fantastic relationship. Thanks all xx

I think your post is very hesitant, If you are not sure then don't go.

Why does he want to move you away from your family?

ToriWel · 08/04/2013 09:29

I don't think it's about moving me away from my family, it's more that we want a better quality of life away from the rat race. I just want to make sure I'm happy with the area.

Hi Tori, I lived in Crewkerne for a while (about 4 years) and loved it there. The schools were good and it's a much nicer way of life. I am currently back in Essex but miss Somerset so much. Whereabouts in Crewkerne? It's all pretty nice.

Stoneinwelly · 08/04/2013 12:56

hello Tori, I live about 7 miles from Crewkerne, if you need any advise etc. please ask. I don't know how to P.M. I'm afraid!
Crewkerne is set in nice countryside, very handy for Lyme Regis and Jurassic coast. Crewkerne has good housing stock, the local hamstone is lovely. Schools O.K. I think. Crewkernes' favourite sport at present is spotting Martin Clunes shopping in Waitrose but walking by.

Hi JakeBullet. Thank you so much. We're looking around the Park View Estate and seen something up near the new properties. What made you move back? So glad to hear its good.
Stoneinwelly - brilliant, thank you. That's such a relief to know its a good place and theres someone to get advice from. I blog at Verily Victoria Vocalises and my email contact is on there :). Whereabouts do you live?

Crewkerne is much nicer than Yeovil with a nice market townSmile The only tiny weeny downfall is that the local Primary schools feed into Wadham Secondary which has had its probs but they are trying to improve. You can Google local headlines from Dec 2012 and It depends how much you believe Ofsted reports.

Have you looked at local villages more Taunton way aswell for a wider choice, some have fantastic primary schools especially Ilton, Horton, Donyatt, Ilminster and Tatworth. They all feed into a different Ofsted Outstanding rated Secondary. The village children all get the private bus to school when they turn 11 so transport isnt an issue unless it snowsGrin I personally like Ilminster more than Crewkerne but i think the prices are slightly higher because it keeps featuring on programmes like Escape to the country!

Stone Martin Clunes spotting is the only sport around here, i think he lives in Beaminster. It used to be Kate O Mara spotting which wasnt quite as exciting!

I was born in Crewkerne and moved away for college and came back, I am now a journalist for the local free paper. It is my job to report on community activities and schools etc. I can assure you there is a large population of in-comers and the first thing they always say when interviewed is that it is such a friendly town. The schools are great and there are all kinds of groups and activities, there is also a swimming pool ,large recreation grounds and sports centres. There are a few empty shops as with most towns at the moment but still enough to get your daily needs and there is a great convenience store in the Park View area. check out our paper online, follow the link and go to latest issues top left and look for the Weekender Crewkerne edition, you can look through the archives at what goes on.. it may help you get a feel of things. www.viewfromonline.co.uk/ good luck , Marion Draper

Thank you so much for your honesty, help and advice Mrcrumpswife. I had heard rumours about the special measures for the secondary school so I will look into this.We are also looking at a property in Ilton so it will be interesting to see how the places compare.
Marion - thank you so much for this, I really appreciate it - especially from you being a journalist as I am guessing you see lots that goes on. My OH is a freelance journalist and I write too so you are a handy person to know ;). We are also actors (although not as busy as our agents would like us to be!!). We are mainly looking at the Park View area. Will pop across and look at the paper archives.
Everyone has been so very helpful xx

Hello! Can I resurrect this thread? Anyone else live / know Crewkerne ?

NeedAHoliday2021 · 31/10/2021 21:39

I am. I lived there early 2000s but now I’m in yeovil (which gets bad comments but is fab for us and our family). Crewkerne has a small town/village feel. Nice little shops, Waitrose and lovely swimming pool. It’s also only 30 minutes to lyme Regis and near ham him (yeovil being the other end of that country park which is my favourite place with stunning views and a fab pub). Schools wise - secondary has really improved and there’s currently a bit of controversy re getting rid of the middle school system. Happy to answer any questions. Pm me if you like.
