Decorating a new build.

I am wondering if anyone has decorated a new build property recently.

We are due to move in 8 weeks and I have fallen in love with feature wallpaper for a few of the bedrooms. As the property will be freshly plastered would this be silly? The show home had a feature wall but I am unsure .

We moved into our new build in June last year, and had it decorated in November, including some wallpaper, it has been fine. The builders recommended we gave it a couple of months before doing anything, we just didn't get round to it straight away!

Thanks Easy, our build completion date is roughly 10 days before we exchange so I may have to wait a few months. You never know, the paper may have gone on sale by then!

I'd ask the builders how long ago the decorating was done, it might have been a few months by the time you complete, depends on what order they got stuff done in.

We moved I to a new build but left it a while before decorating (been here 6 years, spare room still trade magnolia). Live with it a whole. Feature wallpaper a but passé? .

While. Live with it a while. Just see how it feels.

It probably is a bit passé, but I have a little girl with her eye on some harlequin little gems for the wall behind her bed (white wooden) and I really love the idea of some for the babys room too.

Wallpapering will be fine if they are solid walls .
By that I mean not plaster board.
If they are plasterboard which has been skimmed with a coat of plaster then you will have to stick with wallpaper because when you remove the paper half the skimmed plaster will come off with it.

Talking from bitter experience.....

I'm moving into new build in June and plan to wallpaper a couple of walls just before Christmas to make it feel more cozy. The builders advised waiting a year.

Like the little Jems paper, pretty, our rooms are small so would be tempted to put on all walls.

Morning, I spoke with the builder and they STRONGLY (she couldn't say it seriously enough) advise me to wait a year! When I asked why the show home had wallpaper she replied 'I don't deal with the arty types' .

I am now home and wishing I had asked about hanging pictures, heavy mirrors etc?!? I thought a new build was the easy option after years of re-wiring, re-plumbing and sanding sodding floors!!!

This could be completely wrong but I think within the first year (ie goes through all the seasons) a new build (any new building) will shift/settle expand/ contract type thing and sometimes cracks can appear.
Never usually structural just usually due to pressure on plasterboard etc but you wouldn't know or be able to check if you had the walls covered up with wallpaper.

What inklewinkle said! Do not wallpaper within the 1st year.

I would wait, any cracks that could be corrected by your guarantee would be covered,

as for pictures you'll need a gadget that finds the supports within the wall so you can hand pictures from. we have a huge painting in our lounge, which we fid this with.

I think you should start decorating your place after some time. This will give you a chance to observe your place and see what looks good on it.
