ensuite shower room or separate toilet?

I say go for the ensuite whilst the house is a blank canvas, sis says toilet at the end of the hall is better for families.
What do you think?

What other toilets and/or showers and baths do you have? What else on that floor? What bedrooms, on that floor or elsewhere?

It all sort of depends...

We had the choice when re-doing our shower room to make it ensuite or leave it open to the corridor - we decided against ensuite because it was the only toilet on that floor.

If its the main bedroom it might be nice, but if it's the only one on that floor it will be a pain, disturbance etc. I have an en suite but I hate it:) shut the door! Is a refrain in my bedroom.

I hate an ensuite, rest of family coming in to use my shower, better than main bathroom. If you can just have a shower room all can use.

"If you can just have a shower room all can use."

Hmm All? In a house with teenagers, it's a nightmare in the mornings with everyone wanting showers at the same time. Dh was adamant 8 years ago we should have 2 top-whack power showers upstairs that could be used simultaneously without loss of pressure. DCs were 9 and 7 at the time and I couldn't really see the urgency but went along with it. Thank goodness.

I think there was a misunderstanding, not have an ensuite, have it as an EXTRA shower to main bathroom, that can be accessed from the hall rather than through a bedroom.

twinklingfairy · 03/03/2013 14:32

Its a bungalow.
There is a main bathroom that has a shower over use bath.
Its not possible, in the space, to have it as a shower room open to the house.
It would have to be an ensuite or a toilet.
I feel that the house would benefit a second shower, as clam said, to save future squabbles.
And its as well to do it now, whilst its not a huge upheaval, than do the house up and then, at a later date take on the project.

My parents have bought the house next door to them, which is a replica of what they have.
They updated the bathroom to an ensuite, so it seems logical to me to do the same with this one, which will be a rental.
Sis disagrees, saying that a second toilet is a better way to go, for families.

At the end of the day, the decision is, clearly, my parents but I just thought I would ask for opinions out of interests sake.

Clam Can I ask how you supply enough hot water for 2 power showers, we have a big hot water tank but it depletes in one (and a few moments of a second) shower. How big a tank do we need? OP, a second shower is lovely if you do have enough hot water. But 2 loos in a house are more important (even if one is in the ensuite).

twinklingfairy · 03/03/2013 14:45

There would still be two loos, just one would be accessed via the main bedroom.
Or is that just playing with words Grin Wink

Dunno, but it does. It's a large water tank on its side in the loft. I can't recall the last time we ran out of hot water, so it can't be an issue.

Talkinpeace · 03/03/2013 16:48

When we rebuilt our house we went for a family bathroom (which has become the girls bathroom) and a family shower room (which has become the boys bathroom)
so no en suites, but much more efficient use of space and the kids can both do their thing at the same time ....

AMumInScotland · 03/03/2013 17:16

So the options are -

ensuite shower and loo

just loo and basin, accessed from the hall

In that case, I'd probably go for the ensuite, since that gives the second shower.

But I can see that some people wouldn't want others coming through their bedroom to get to it. Horses for courses I guess.
