Old victorian door frames

They're in pretty bad shape (some chunks missing out sides at top corner etc) been very badly gloss painted over the years ECG, looking bumpy....are these worth trying to save and so I have them taken out and replaced with new door frames.

(If this makes any difference, original skirting boards are in most places throughout the house....no original internal doors, just the front door is original I think. Same with sash windows)

We trying to get a very 'good' finish throughout, replastered walls, ceilings, sanded and waxed floorboards (which I know will be cold and draughty!) etc and everything painted a fresh white so I want to make sure I make the right choice about the door frames!

So WWYD?

Hmm. Are they too bad to use wood filler? You could strip the paint off, filler and repaint?

I'd try and keep, but well, you know what I'm like over these things!

Hello Sausage! They're just very chipped and with the way they're detailed (not just flat wood) they're going to be tricky to sand IYKWIM and one door frame seems to have a slice of wood taken out of it on the top right hand corner strangely so it looks as if its been cut on the slant...another chunk has been taken out in the inside of the doorframe too which I'm not sure if filler would fill very satisfactorily. Don't want to rip our original things I shouldn't be though...just want to have a great finish at the end of all this though at the same time!

The doorway into kitchen has already been ripped out for some reason and been replaced with a modern doorframe. There are also to new door frames upstairs where previous owner was trying to 'improve' layout!

It is quite easy to find reproduction architrave for door frames - there are dozens of styles avaialble so you may find something a good enough match to replace your worst ones at a decent timber merchant. Are you staining or painting. The other thing is to try a salvage yard.
