Has anyone had tall cupboards built into the alcoves either side of their fireplace?

We have two rooms we want to do this i (bedroom and lounge), and no storage so they are very mich needed. Was wondering rough costs for this sort of thibg.

I got a quote 2 years ago and it was £3000 for one alcove with cupboards at the bottom and 2 floating shelves. We didn't get it done as it seemed expensive. In London. Maybe cheaper outside m25! Most places do free quotes.

Shock Shock £3000!!! For one?!?

we had a quote for cupboards and shelves above in two alcoves. in mdf. it came to just over £500.

for price comparison, we're in the SE, but not London.

We knew someone who did £500 per alcove for whatever you wanted. MDF and you had to do all the painting yourself, but it was about 8 years ago. For full height unpainted I'd expect to pay about £800 - £1000 per alcove now. (London)

Try and find an idependent joiner, not a big company. And get 3 quotes.

We had both alcoves done with 3 cupboards at the bottom & shelves above
Done in mdf & SW mouldings. Primed and painted white. Cupboards on one side have doors which fold in & open to allow DVD / V+ box/ Amp to be on show for use. £600 for 2 - but this was when he did a series of jobs for us so was part of a package of work.
