I have had a gas boiler installed with 5 rads and the one in the living room as no control knob, the boiler is upstairs so I was wondering why no control knob downstairs on the radiator, it gets so hot I can only just about bear to touch it (radiator) is this normal?, Hope someone can advise, regards

sounds like the house thermostat should be in the living room - it is usually in the room without the thermostatic valve on the radiator.

is it?

if it is, which is likely, then that radiator should be adjusted so that it warms up that room slower than the radiators warm all the other rooms in the house. If not, it will get hot and the room stat will turn off the heating so that the other rooms won't warm up enough.

It should not have a TRV, otherwise the TRV and the room stat will be in contention.

It is quite easy to adjust the rad, but it will take a bit of time where you adjust it, go away for a couple of hours and possibly adjust it a bit more.
