A stupid question about treating exterior woodwork

I may possibly have just won the argument with DH about sticking with our rather nice current wooden window frames/ fascias, or replacing them with nasty rosewood uPVC.

So... the windows are a dark brown colour, and are treated with something which doesn't have the glossy finish of gloss paint, but is a proper film-type seal and which still leaves the wood grain visible underneath it. Is this likely to be a wood stain, a varnish, or something else? (Paintwork will need doing this srping but I'm not sure what to ask painter and decorator for!)

TIA.

probably a breathable woodstain

if you have a good local painter he will know what to use.
