Thrilling question about damp.

We own our first house. The front wall is damp inside (Vic terrace) and things are getting mouldy.

I was going to call a builder to have a look and do a free quote, but then someone said it was better to get a surveyor to see what the problem is as builders often over-quote for this type of thing.

Anybody got any experience of this? What should we do?

Can't help on who to talk to but have you a gutter that needs cleaning? Can be a problem with Victorian houses if they get clogged. Have a look at it next time it rains if waters running over the top of the gutter you need to get it cleaned.

Ok thanks - that is a possibility. do these things dry out themselves if that's the problem or do you have to get someone in anyway ?

What Karron says - check the gutters and also any downpipes from the gutters, and have a look at the roof while you are at it, and at all the bits where roof meets ridges or chimneys etc. Try to work out where the water is getting in. It might only be a little leak but it builds up over time.

Then there are two things - first is whether the leak needs fixing professionally or if you can do it properly yourself (you can clear your own gutters and stabilise downpipes but can't redo your flashings [the bit where the roof joins the chimney etc]); second is whether inside needs replastering or you can just let it dry out then paint it with stainstopper and redecorate over the top. It probably will need replacing and replastering to be honest.

Get three quotes from builders, and use something like Checkatrade to check them out beforehand. Many builders are absolutely straightforward and helpful, because they have a reputation to maintain and know how important word of mouth is.

God sorry to be so helpless but would you go up a big ladder and check yourself? I suggested doing as much to my dad (me going not him) and he implied I was a nutter!

do you drape wet washing around the house or on radiators?

have you got an effective extractor in the bathroom?

if you invite a person who sells damp-proofing into your home, he will tell you that you need damp-proofing.
