Installation costs wood burner or gas stove

We are looking to install either a wood burner or gas stove and just hoping to get a very rough idea of what would be involved and costs, whether one way would be cheaper than the other.

There is a gas pipe which has been capped in the fireplace so unsure if this would need to be moved by qualified gas installer before work could start on the wood burner or if it may be easier to go for the gas stove.

Any advice appreciated.

You probably would need to have the pipe removed by a CORGI engineer. After that, chimney lining and wood burner installation would be approx £1000 IME, plus the cost of the stove itself.

(we paid about £50 for removing a gas pipe, BTW)

I've just been quoted £175 to swap an outset gas fire for a slimline gas stove, without any further work to the fireplace, on a precast flue.

We bought a stove recently and while I think the stove itself cost £1500, the work and the flue brought it up to £2400.

Sorry - should have clarified - it was a multi-fuel stove

if it will be a wood burner, your chimney may need to be lined - get a woodburner installer round to quote and they will have a look and assess it. I paid £550 for the stove and £400 for the installation, but fortunately the chimney was already lined.

You won't necessarily need a capped gas pipe removed as the wood burner is totally enclosed. Also, if your fireplace is against an external wall the flue can go through that instead of up the chimney.
