Please can you suggest locations in the UK where I could buy a 3 bed house for £250k?

We're looking to relocate after a change of lifestyle. We've always lived in or near London and commuted and paid a premium for property at the same time. I've now decided not to work for the next few years while the children are young so I fancy living somewhere different.

I'd love to buy an affordable house with a garden and idealy walking distance to schools, shops and a park would be fantastic.

Lots for that in Norfolk...close to the City and quieter villages

FlojoHoHoHo · 16/12/2012 09:12

Well I live in Lancashire. You could get a nice house, with gardens etc for that. In a rural village with walking distance to good schools. Low crime rates etc.

We are looking at high wycombe, which has nice property in that range, good schools and still comutable to London

CobOnTheCorn · 16/12/2012 09:12

Thanks mellowcat. Any particular cities/towns that you could recommend or suggest we don't bother with?

Dorset, Wool, Wareham, Dorchester, Crossways.

Swindon. One hour from London and v unfashionable, but cheap and cheerful.

OodKingWenceslas · 16/12/2012 09:16

Easy in Cumbria or lots of northern places.

RillaBlythe · 16/12/2012 09:17

Manchester & environs.

purplerainbow · 16/12/2012 09:17

East sussex. Especially if your after rural with small towns but easy access to bigger towns and 1 hour commute to london.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 16/12/2012 09:18

Newcastle or Durham , even a 4 bed.

NewFerry · 16/12/2012 09:18

Still in Wiltshire but less busy than Swindon, look at Chippenham, Melksham, Trowbridge (Hilperton side), or Calne.

HalleLouja · 16/12/2012 09:19

You could buy one in my village which is in Herts so easy striking distance of the big smoke.

EdithWeston · 16/12/2012 09:19

Lincolnshire?

marbeth · 16/12/2012 09:21

What about Ashford in kent. Some nice estates with school's in walking distance . Easy drive to coast . Would get 4 bedroom house.

CobOnTheCorn · 16/12/2012 09:25

Wow, lots of suggestions. Thanks very much. I felt a bit silly asking in case I got lots of 'I wish I had that much money to spend' responses.

I've started to look on Rightmove at Norfolk already but it's a bit too big a search area.

Dorset ar the places (Wool etc) you mention towns in Dorset (sorry for not having a clue!).

purple which towns in East Sussex are you thinking of? I thought we were outpriced but I'm obviously looking inthe wrong places.

I'd have thought just about anywhere but London, to be honest. I like in a ravishing part of Devon where you could easily get a three bed for that. Do you need to be near London? What's your search area [channels inner Kirstie]

Yarg · 16/12/2012 09:26

like = live, obvs.

smugmumofboys · 16/12/2012 09:28

Some parts of Cheshire. Very good schools, near to Liverpool and Manchester and easy access to lovely countryside.

QuickQuickSleigh · 16/12/2012 09:29

here ?

KvetnutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 16/12/2012 09:30

in our town in Herts there are plenty of 3 beds for that price or under too.

Worley · 16/12/2012 09:31

agree with mellow cat. Norfolk and Suffolk have some beautiful big houses for that amount.

bryonywhisker · 16/12/2012 09:31

you could get massive 5 bed here in Lincs

Skiffen · 16/12/2012 09:33

Lots of Devon!

HenriettaTurkey · 16/12/2012 09:34

You'll get something lovely in Sheffield.

Yarg · 16/12/2012 09:35

Do you have any 'roots' you can build on, OP? Any friends or family, childhood associations etc outside London? Anywhere that 'calls' you?
