Knobs especially with panelled doors in an older house.

However you do need a greater backset (distance from door edge to spindle) or you will bang your knuckles on the frame. Five inches or so is usual.

You can buy horizontal sashlocks, or longer mortice latches, but may have to order them as 67mm latches are cheaper and more common, and more common.

Thanks PigletJohn, it's a 1970's house and these are the doors - do you think they're suitable?

And here are the, ahem ( Grin @ Mrs Bucket), knobs

The stiles look too narrow. How far from the edge can the spindles be?

HappyGirlNow · 11/12/2012 08:52

Sorry, not sure what you mean? Blush

I don't really have a preference aesthetically. We have handles on our doors because I find them easier to operate (I have arthritis in my hands, so this is something we had to think about). Our handles are very plain and simple though. I don't really like the incredibly ornate ones.

The knobs go on a spindle which operates the latch when you want to open the door. For a knob, the spindle (and centre of the knob) would be preferably five, but at leadt three, inches from the edge of the door.

The stiles of that door (the side pieces) might only be 70mm so there is nothing to fix the knob to.

I can't read the lettering in the technical drawing, but the stiles look like the smallest measurement on there, so the stiles ate 110mm.

Unless you have a very small knob, and ate happy to risk your knuckles every time you open the door, I'd go for handles.

Personally, I think handles would look better on those doors anyway. I like knobs on old wooden doors, but handles on modern designs.

Thanks all.. I think my knob is a fairly good size Grin so I will just go with handles.. I do agree the knobs would look better on older doors..

I think handles would look better on that style of door. We have black iron knobs on our 1930s doors - set in 3+ inches as advised by Piglet....and my builder
