Buying a house, and local electrician kindly took a look for us. He said, ideally, rewire for 4-5k, but that we don't have to. It has some new wiring but quite a lot of oldish wiring too. But alternatively, he said, we could go for a bits and pieces approach, and do things gradually over the years, rewiring room by room and leaving the (minority) of new wiring alone.
Really don't know which way to go - perfectionist in me says get it done as we hope it is our forever home and we may have the money: if so is it worth getting it over with? Or if a sparks says you can live with it, should I just go with that?
