betterwhenthesunshines · 07/11/2012 19:06

Rail, otherwise when you paint or wallpaper something different above and below, you won't have anywhere to stop!

AgentProvocateur · 07/11/2012 19:08

Dildo rail in this house too, Katisha.

OP, rail.

SoupDragon · 07/11/2012 19:09

just railed,thanks
but what do you do the wall where theres a handrail?
no rail
rail and handrail
remove handrail and rail instead

Do you need a handrail?

wendybird77 · 07/11/2012 22:25

I'd rail and handrail - doesn't the handrail sit higher than the dado rail anyway? It does in our stair. The important thing is that there is flush rail at the same height on both sides of the stairs. IMO.

wfrances · 08/11/2012 13:47

not ours
dado is at 1metre
handrail 87-93 cms so it will sit just below.its only on the turn wall at the top of the middle landing, so is quite small.
think ill get rid.

you can get wooden handrail that screws to the wall (no brackets) which would fulfill the dado rails purpose where a handrail is needed. It is shaped so the top part that you grip stands away from the wall.

I say Chair Rail not dado rail. It prevents chairs from bruising the plaster in a dining room, restaurant, conference room, ballroom etc. and is positioned to suit the chairs you have.

wendybird77 · 08/11/2012 15:00

We say chair rail in the US too (at least where I'm from).

wfrances · 08/11/2012 18:02

piglet john- thats whats there, but it doesnt cover the whole wall, but we could remove existing and replace fully across the wall at dado height.

Just got back to this.
Dado rail should be at the same height as the handrail ie mirror it as you come up the stairs.
Rarely do I have chairs on the stairs.
