Need more info. Are these brand new plaster walls, covered in old wallpaper walls, wooden walls, unfinished brick walls...? (I've got all of these at least somewhere in the house.)

:) depends on surface.

I am going to assume your walls already have existing paint on them and are not newly plastered.

You would probably be best off giving them a very quick sand and wash with sugar soap solution prior to painting.

Unless the walls are fairly new and this is only the second time they have been painted, in which case wash with sugar soap solution.

Sanding roughs up the current paint so the new paint can stick better to it. It also gets rid of lumps and bumps of old paint stuck to the wall. The sugar soap gets rid of grease.

Thank you so much.old walls and painted a long time ago.that was very helpful." Marital dispute" is probably more relevant on this thread than many others :) (had you guessed that I am doing the sanding......) and have totally changed my mind on colours again aaaargh......
Thanks
