Welling -what's it like?

I've never been there but house prices look very appealing... Is it a nice place to bring children up?

What ethnicity are you? That makes a big difference in Welling... HQ of the BNP used to be in Welling, it's also close to welling where Stephen Lawrence was murdered. But there are far FAR worse areas in that part of Kent. Avoid Erith and Slade green like the plague! Also Woolwich and Plumstead. Bexely and Bexleyheath have nice bits. Welling in (or was 5 years ago) a middle ground.

Personally we moved up north as soon as we had dd to avoid raising her in north Kent.

Well I'm white, but my DH is black.... Is it best to be avoided then?

welling is dull, but i disagree about it being racist. Its about half am hour to central London on the train. Bexleyheath shopping centre is nearby, bluewater about 15mins away by car. Its a quiet area really, although the high st has a few pubs that get busy on a weekend. Danson park is just off the high st and fab for kids. Easy to get to Greenwich park, and blackheath. Schools are good at primary level. We are on shooters hill which is Greenwich/welling border by oxleas woods, great for walks and sledgeing. Woodlands farm is lovely all year. Welling has bexley grammar at secondary level if you can get through the 11+. I really like it!

half the kids at my ds school are black, as are our neighbours and friends. I wouldnt worry about that!

Sorry to post in this thread but we are aso looking to buy in Welling. What we have found generally is that property market is more upbeat in south welling than north. We are looking at a property in Welling, just off Lynmere road. really like the property, but not sure of the area just because we don't live there.. We have heard some horror stories related to BNP party HQ etc..

Definitely south welling, rather than north. Bexleyheath is just down the road. Nice roads there too. North Bexleyheath (meaning north of the tracks) is OK too - The Pantiles, Brampton Road, round there and over to Pickford Lane etc.

In ye olden times, the BNP had their HQ in Upper Wickham Lane. That's the bit of Welling that's mentioned, if you're concerned.

Welling is duller than a dull thing, though. It does have 2 supermarkets (Morrisons and Tesco), some North African/Mediterranean supermarkets.

The part of Welling which is just near Westwood Lane, Welling Way, over that direction is OK too. (Actually, just looked back through thread and someone else has mentioned them).

I've lived in the area for 45 years, so know it quite well.....

I grew up in Welling. Definitely used to have an air of racial tension (certain pubs were BNP pubs, the riot etc). As a pastime me and some mates used to go out at night to spray over BNP graffiti. And it was just generally very drab and horrid. May have improved now though, and thankfully the council finally kicked out the BNP.

I am Indian and live in welling and know of other Asian living here with no problems. As mentioned, south welling is the nicer side. I love living here as lots of shops on high street and close to danson park which is very popular.

I lived there 20 years ago from 10-16. I wouldn't want to bring up teenagers there, but I was v naughty and would probably found trouble regardless of where I was! And TBH, I think that in London generally (yes, I know it's Kent really but you know what I mean) you're always close to shitty areas. And kids will always go where they're told not to (Erith, Thamesmead etc).

We lived near Danson Park which is super. And my brother inadvertantly worked in a BNP pub (although once he realised he tried to quit but they wouldn't let him!!). It was terrifying! My brother was always scared that they'd find out he had two very good friends that were black and asian - it literally took us leaving the area before they'd accept his resignation. Scary scary men. Lots of my friends' dad's were also openly racist which was horrible - very intrenched in the culture and I'm not friends with these ppl anymore.

My brother he now lives in Bexley with his family and has done for many years, I understand it's not bad any more.

Thanks for sharing so much information about Welling. I am Indian. We are planning to buy a house in South Welling that fulfills most of our criteria, close to Westwood Lane which is nice.
How's the high street area? I find it a bit unclean and a lot of local shops and the area around the station was a bit dodgy.

Another option I have is Sidcup, I quite liked the high street in Sidcup and the wider clean roads but the house which we saw for buying is not that good compared to one in South Welling.

We are a bit confused, we don't want to wait for any more. Is it worth moving to Sidcup?

Any guidance is much appreciated, we have to make a decision.

When I left there five years ago, a bloke had been running up and down the high street with a machete, and my flatmate kept coming home telling me about muggings he'd witnessed close to our home.

It was rapidly going downhill.

The racists quota is pretty high in the area too, if that matters to you.

Sorry to bump this thread I know it's old. I'm Indian too and considering moving to South Welling, close to Danson Park. How did you guys get on in the area and are there any regrets?
