I know Chelmsford and have some relatives in Witham. It might be easier if you say what areas you are considering and I will tell you whether I would consider them to be ok or not.

We are looking at Rowan way, the Carraways, Maidment crescent, Saul's Ave, Cherry Tree Rise, Mersey rd, Cedar drive and Chelmer rd in Witham ! Thanks,
we are looking at Chelmer village as well as Braintree, but we know nothing about Braintree either ! Thanks.

Hi Terri

I grew up in Braintree and would say these areas are worth a look: Kings Park Village (very sought after and close to Lyons Hall school which has a good reputation), White Court in Great Notley and anywhere around London Road in Black Notley. Church Meadows and Nowell Close in Bocking are both really nice and are about 1.5 miles from Braintree town centre.

Not so nice areas are Bartram Avenue, Hay Lane, Wheatley Avenue, Fairview Estate and the Glebe Estate.

Personally, I prefer Chelmsford. It's got really good schools, lots of nice restaurants and bars, decent shops, parks, an ice skating rink and it's only 35 mins to London by train. You mentioned Chelmer Village, which is really popular (there's a good shopping centre there). Beaulieu Park is nice too. Broomfield, Writtle and Great Baddow are other areas worth considering. Avoid the Melbourne estate and Meadgate Avenue, both are pretty dodgy.

Hope that helps! Smile

Hi, Thanks for your help, we like Chelmsford too but really haven't got the funds for there ! In Braintree, do you know these roads, they look ok on rightmove....Clouded Yellow Close, Challis Lane, Newnham Close, Hunnable Rd, Tortoishell Way, Bridport Way, Comma close. Vernon Way, Rona Drive, Dearleap Way, Osmond Close, Derwent Way !!!!!! Thank you.

DP grew up in Braintree. Generally its ok. Lots of new houses but a pretty ropey town centre. The Fairview is actually quite nice considering its an estate. He moved to Colchester which he preferred to Chelmsford.....

Thank you..... do you know what the names of the roads are around The fairview and Glebe estates ? Thanks.

IIRC Glebe estate is the roads off Glebe Ave and Fairview is off Mountbatten Ave.
I've got some great friends on the Glebe and so I don't think it's that bad at all, not 'naice' but not rough like the bits of London that I've lived in :)

I don't know Witham well enough to comment on individual streets I'm afraid.
Personally i wouldn't live in Braintree but know plenty of people that do.

Chemer Village is nice as is Great Baddow, although both are quite far from the station if that is a concern.

We like Chelmer Village too, not in our budget though !
