What instead of a fireplace for your wood burner?

We're having a wood burner installed into our chimney breast. There was a fireplace but it was a fake 1930s tile one which had to be demolished to make the hole big enough. So now we just have a plain plastered chimney breast where the stove recessed. We've got a slab of slate for the hearth.
We were going to tile the 'hole' where the stove sits. But with no mantlepiece of fireplace just wondering whether it will look rather bare.

Does anyone have any smart designs for what goes around a wood burning stove?

Our house was built in 1970 and our decor is simple. Aiming for Danish look... Although not tidy enough to achieve it.

Relatives of ours just have the plain chimney breast and it looks really nice. I thought the same as you before it was done but we've decided to do the same when we get ours done.

We're having a plain chimney breast with a wooden lintel (if that's the word) above. Not structural, just decorative.

I want to put one in the next house, it has a slate chimney breast and a slab of slate of the hearth so would look nice with a wood stove on it.

I think woodburners look better with a simple surround as you have described OP. Although i do like the idea of an oak mantel as described above.

That Oak mantle does look good Romilly
