in middle of insurance claim for damage from water leak from bathroom
option of using insurers approved trades for remedial work or obtaining the three quotes method and using my own trades
first time been in this position. Which option is best?

Check your insurer's terms and conditions as they may offer you a guarantee if you use their approved trades. On the other hand, I have heard of people who have been very unhappy with the quality of work by approved tradesmen and would have preferred to have their own choice. At least you can then pick someone you know is good. The problem I would have is getting three quotes as good people are so busy it's hard to even get a quote.
