next door being underpinned

Has anyone had any experience with this? We heard some rumous that the other half of our semi detached will be underpinned shortly. There are renters living there so they apparently need to be out at some point, but no one has approached us about anything.

We are on a slope and their house sits under ours. We have a few hairline cracks, nothing major, but theirs has cracks you can stick your hand into (eek!). I just worry that underpinning is such major works and surely having their half of the building done will effect ours.

Any advice or experiences you can share?

We live in a London Victorian terraced house and both houses either side have been underpinned! One side about 14 years ago, the other a couple of years ago. Neither seemed to affect ours, but obviously it is a different situation to yours.

My mum and dad had their semi underpinned as it was subsiding but it was caused by the previous owners removing a chimney breast and not putting in proper support afterwards. It didn't affect the other side of the semi at all. I've seen other cases at work though where the drains were the problem as they were damaged by tree roots. Is there any way you could find out the reason why it needs to be done?
