How can I paint walls to look like wood?

I've promised DD she can paint her new bedroom any colour she wants (we're moving soon and 'her' room is currently hideously pink!).

She wants Tardis blue (she's just a tiny bit mad on Doctor Who ). Is it possible to paint woodgrain on somehow? I've done it on a cupboard door before, 'dragging' a dry paintbrush over wet paint, but that was on tiny panels and wouldn't work on a whole wall.

I have no idea! But back in the 80s when paint effects were all the rage [shudders at the memory] you could buy rollers that gave particular finishes. Might be worth a search to see if you can find a specialist supplier?

What about his kind of thing instead? Might be easier than trying to paint a woodgrain effect. Sorry I can't make the link work on my phone as on the train.....

My mum had a weird plastic thing - a half circle plastic bit with a wood grain pattern on attached to a pivot. You rocked and dragged it down the paint. It did sort of do plank effects - no one would believe they were real but it was to do a beach hut effect and kind of worked.

You might be able to find a blown vinyl wallpaper with a raised woodgrain effect.

The graining effect brushes are for colour not texure

If you're moving soon the next people might not like a thick paint with ridges

If she wants a Tardis effect, how about trying to create a panelling effect (like the tardis has) instead of woodgrain. You would basically need to draw rectangles on the wall (using a slightly lighter blue and a ruler and fine brush) after painting. Easier than woodgrain I would think, though needs a steady hand.

Ronseal Paint & Grain - used this to create a pirate cabin many years ago and it's still on the market and comes in various wood colours.
