If you found a house that ticked all your boxes but was ugly, would you buy it?

I mean, really ugly. But going on the assumption that when you're inside it you can't see what it looks like on the outside, would you ignore the ugly outside and revel in the perfect inside?

No it woud have to look good on the outside too

how ugly? this was our first house, I passed the details to DP and said "don't look at the picture, read the descriptions"

Also would depend if it could be hidden improved with a few climbing plants.

I remember Kirsty on Location Location Location saying you are not the one who has to look at the outside of your house!! I always remember that while I'm looking for houses.

I've seen a house that's ugly from the front and would offer if we could sell our pretty from the front house :). Husband is still a bit unsure though.

I'm surprised that Kirsty would say something like that, but I suppose she's advising people who are buying "homes" as opposed to houses. If it's your home I suppose it's ok, but if you're worried about it's resale value then I guess outer looks would come in to it?

Ugly wouldn't bother me. My house isn't that geat a looking house but it is a great place to live.

Yes, I think it was very ugly - although that picture looks worse than I remember it.
But it was that - 3 bed semi (it says terraced but it wasn't), with conservatory, and garage and parking (private road so we owned the bit outside our house) or a 2-up/2-down terrace with non-existant on street parking for the same money.
We got a lot more for our money by having an ugly house than we would have otherwise done.

If it gives you what you want internally then go for it. The value of the house will be less than prettier places but if you take that into account when buying and eventually selling so what?

I wouldn't - unless it was a real rarity (e.g. in the one street I really wanted to live on) or very cheap.

I persuaded DH to see an ugly house on Saturday. He said he didn't want to go.

Then, the setting and the interior totally won him over and he says it's his favourite house now. But, seeing it in person, I went off it.

Yes I did. I only have to look at it when I drive up and park. When I am inside I look at the gorgeous views. It was more than £150k cheaper than the neighbour's house which is easy on the eye.

I wouldn't, personally. I'd rather compromise on other things.

How ugly? I remember a previous thread on similar lines - that was a REALLY ugly house!

If you can't afford a nicer looking house in the same space and location then I'd probably go for it. Just remember that when you come to sell, the same thoughts will be going through potential buyer's minds.

I don't think squirrels house looks at all ugly. Pretty standard kind of thing. It's the front of a house, not an objet d'art...

Not really ugly - if I don't like it on Streetview I wouldn't read the description and def wouldn't go & view it.

Our place didn't have much curb appeal when we bought it but we are improving it both inside & out so hopefully it will be attractive to buyers should we sell & a nicer place to drive up to (& live in) if we decide to stay.

My house is a 1970 box. It is the same size as the double fronted villa next door, but that would cost about double. I could have bought a smaller, prettier house in a less amenable location, but right now, my priorities are size and situation.

I'm the same - when I drove up to now house my initial reaction was "why has dh brought me here!"

But the inside and the garden won me over and now I'm very fond of it!

Several years ago I bought and ugly (grey concrete with a grey concrete slab in front) cottage. It looked bloody awful (north facing too).

I have painted the walls cream and installed a cottage garden (where the slab used to be), put treliss up the walls. Almost every week in the summer I have people commenting on how lovely it looks.

(Oh we reinstated 2 windows aswell which made it look more balanced).

In time the must be something you can do to improve the look, (and architect or design specialist may be able to help).

If the interior space feels good and works, the exterior should be able to be worked on.

I think it depends, is it a good price (would you get the money back if you needed to sell quickly) and are their other compelling features i.e great garden, fab location.

The issue for me would be resale - if if puts you off buying it it's likely to put off other people and it's very stressful selling a house that others just don't want t buy.

It would have to be bloody brilliant afterwards for me to want to get home each night to something really ugly
