Stripey stair runners? If not, what?

I rather like these, but I seem to remember them featuring in a long thread of things that have been done to death and are now a bit dated, like feature walls, giant letters and union flag cushions. What are people doing with their stairs instead? We will be doing hard floors on the ground floor, carpet on the first and hard on the second, if that makes a difference.

Well I like them, but they cost a bloody fortune.

I've been looking at this one for our hall/stairs area (Victorian 3 storey semi).

That's pretty much our dilemma; I think they look great now, but am fairly convinced they will look overdone in a few years time (I speak with some experience of that, as we bought one of the first Sanderson 'Dandelion Clocks' patterned blinds when they turned up, walked into John Lewis and it was over the whole shop like a rash. We had to move to get away from it.)

I have seen these which I love but they are rather expensive.

I'm getting a stripey stair runner (finished painting the stairs yesterday, hurrah!) I don't know anybody who has one, and know enough people who covet them, to think that that they've got a good few years' life in them yet.

And more importantly, I like them. So I am getting one.

Onesandwich I love those dotty ones! They would be far too adventurous for DH though. The Quirky Tess in black has potential though.

MrsMiniver I tend to think the same thing - we'll probably end up going stripey anyway.

We have a stripey runner and love it. I don't think they will be done to death and will look classy for years to come! I went for kersaintcobb it wasn't really that expensive, around £1k for a standard stair case and split level landing (Edwardian house). If you like it go for it, but then I do have feature walls as well so I'm not the best person to ask!

Stair runners are a classic, not a fad. If you can put beautiful brass or black metal stair rods on them, so much the better. onesandwichshort, those are beautiful!

Like! But I do have a vague rule of thumb not to use pattern on things that are expensive to change. We've got a plain herringbone runner in coir ( I think) with a brown border all the way up on either side.

I would love to get rid of our stair carpet and put in a runner with stair rods.
So for a standard set if stairs with no turn. Would the cost be about 1K?
What do you do at the top? How does it end into the landing carpet?

Question for those with runners, how wide are your stairs/runner? I'd love to do this with a plain runner and coloured border but I fear my stairs are too narrow. Also I don't really want to take up the carpet on the landing and replace woth a runner, is this a must or will it look odd otherwise?

Most runners also come in a standard carpet width too. On our landing we have wall to wall then runner again up the stairs to our loft.
