How to prepare this pine toybox for painting?

I am desperately seeking a toy storage solution and this doesn't seem too bad although I'd like to paint the frame.

The description says "Solid Pine. Clear acrylic lacquer". What will I need to do to paint it?

I've being doing a lot of this type of thing lately.

You could take the varnish off with nitromores. But tbh I couldn't be bothered with that so I got some 3 in 1 sealer, undercoat, primer painted 2 coats of that, and then the paint. I'm loving painting old furniture.

Thanks Karbea. That sounds much better as I'm 9 months pregnant so don't want to work with strong chemicals.
