Canvassing opinion before I assemble - what do you think of this console table?

As per usual I've got myself into a ridiculous indecisive tizz about buying a piece of furniture.

Our stupidly disorganised hall is bereft of furniture and at the moment houses an assortment of shoes. I've been looking for ages for something naice to go in it, but have been dithering for what seems like forever. We live in a Victorian house, fairly narrow hallway but high ceilings.

Didn't want 'shabby chic', didn't want to go 'retro modern', didn't want 'French chateau', don't really like M&S style furniture. Then I found <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?hl=en&biw=1162&bih=490&tbm=isch&tbnid=npbhwRVuCARjPM:&imgrefurl=nobleandwood.com/beingblease/loop-mirror/&imgurl=nobleandwood.com/beingblease/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/loop_mirror.jpg&w=469&h=700&ei=S29HUOWEC6qx0QWpjIHwCw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=103&vpy=121&dur=538&hovh=178&hovw=119&tx=82&ty=139&sig=105550521792854460835&page=1&tbnh=144&tbnw=96&start=0&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:70" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this Loop mirror and fell in love with it. So ordered one with yellow leather strap. To go with it I've ordered this console from JL but to be honest, I think it's overpriced for what it is. It's currently sitting in its box in the hallway.

Anyone have any thoughts on it? Am a bit nervous that I'll assemble it and not like it and then not be able to send it back Blush

My ideal was to order this but in a 2-drawer version but it wouldn't arrive until November. It matches the colour we have our front door and window frames painted and I love the colour. And then to maybe get a different coloured strap on the mirror, or possibly another mirror entirely. God I'm rubbish at all this. Worried that my impatience means I've ordered the JL one when actually I don't like it enough......

Hmm. I feel your pain, hallway furniture is tricky. FWIW I think the JL table and the Loop mirror work together although the table is a bit understated. Understated isn't a bad thing but in a high ceilinged space it might get a bit lost. However, if you were do something dramatic with the walls you might find you don't need a dramatic table as well.

Don't think the black table goes with the loop mirror. Have you looked at the Oka website? Warning: you have to keep an eye on quality with Oka, but there are some slim consoles - Kyoto is quite slim, and dark, without being too oriental.

MrsLettuce · 05/09/2012 16:53

TBH for the price difference the blue table you love would be my choice. Every time. Bugger the wait. It's much, much nicer. The JL one looks pretty kitcheny to me. It would spoil the mirror, I think whereas the other one would be fab with it.

MadBusLady · 05/09/2012 17:30

Why would you need to get a different coloured strap on the mirror if you got the blue table? My mum is like this, she thinks the most fiddly-faddly little things that are several feet away from each other need to match. There's nothing wrong with a blue table and a teensy amount of yellow on a nearby accessory, unless you're also having bright green walls and a pink carpet!

I'd wait the extra two months, get the two things you actually like, they both come from your personal taste which is why they'll go together just fine, and you'll look at them and always be pleased you got them rather than doing a half-measure.

MadBusLady · 05/09/2012 17:36

By the way, I'd say the John Lewis table was definitely "retro modern" and the blue table was definitely verging on "shabby chic" but maybe I'm mis-using those labels Grin

ladymuckbeth · 05/09/2012 17:54

Thank you, but oh buggery bollocks it means I have to send back the JL table doesn't it and just when I wanted the house to look vaguely grown up before my brother and family descend on Saturday ?

Bloody hell.

MadBusLady - well yes yes to the JL one being vaguely retro-modern, I suppose to be more precise I was trying to avoid this kind of thing and re. the shabby chic - yy again - sort of - although this is the kind of vintage-repainted-used to be a piece of rubbish table I didn't want. The Orchid one is overpriced too; just love the colour and it matches the outside of our house.

You are so right re. the strap not needing to match - I'm just not sure that bright yellow with ash wood and teal lacquer goes at all. I think to be honest that I need to get the teal table, and maybe use the loop mirror somewhere else if it doesn't work because it's nice enough in itself.

Any clearer than? Nope, thought not Confused Grin

bright yellow with ash wood and teal lacquer will work. Just depends if you like the way it works Smile

ladymuckbeth · 05/09/2012 17:56

Btw fresh wanted to say that maybe by saying 'high ceilings' I've overstated it a bit. They're probably 250cm...

ladymuckbeth · 05/09/2012 17:57

Thanks MrsLettuce. A friend once said to me, just make sure everything you buy for your home you love and then it will work. I try to think like that but always suffer a crisis of confidence at the last minute - not least because I can't bear the thought of making an expensive mistake...

OP posts:
MadBusLady · 05/09/2012 17:59

Ah, you've got visitors, that explains it. We can't have those at the moment. Our flat is too rubbish. Grin

See how it goes with the ash/teal laquer thing. I'd be optimistic about it going better than you think, but then I am quite into a bit of mess mismatch.

ladymuckbeth · 05/09/2012 18:14

I've spent years not having visitors for that very reason. At the ripe old age of 42 it's about time I either a) grew up or b) got over it Grin

I've even bought a PAINTING and should have it, you know, framed and on the wall by the time they arrive....

MadBusLady · 05/09/2012 18:19

Ooo ark at er with er fancy ways!

My mum still talks about how she'll decorate her perfect house when she grows up. She is 64. Not sure whether I find that inspirational or terrifying.

wendybird77 · 05/09/2012 20:50

FWIW teal and yellow are fab together (in moderation). Love both the blue table and the mirror. I like the JL table, but if you don't love it send it back. Or paint it teal ;-)

ladymuckbeth · 05/09/2012 22:10

Egads, I'm going to have to send the table back. And present yet again a stupidly unfinished house to guests. I mean, we've only lived here 7 years! Hmm

And MadBusLady - forget your Ikea posters, my mother commented when she came to visit last week "why have you got blank photo frames mounted on the wall" when she saw a couple of cheapo Ikea frames I'd propped up on existing hooks on the wall, still in their packaging - one of these days I might actually put a photo or two in them...

The blue table is lovely, much nicer than the JL one.

It would look fabulous with the yellow-strap mirror Smile

FishfingersAreOK · 05/09/2012 22:40

You may have found your solution though. Find a table you like on ebay. Paint it teal. Talk knowledgably to your visitors about how important it is to wait for the "right" peice of furniture to come along and that rushing into decieions just to "finish" is misguided/lacking vision/sypotmatic of the must-have generataion etc etc. Make them admire the not yet finished and worry about thier own decisions.

And an un mumsnetty hug for the fact you are so worried about your hall table as they are coming. Is this your mum digging or your brother? Tell them to find a mirror to swing from Wink (not leather hung)

FishfingersAreOK · 05/09/2012 22:42

Pants. Too much wine on a Weds night. Forgot to correct tablet/wine induced typos. Am going to slink to bed now.

And I love that teal table BTW. And the mirror. JL one a bit...meh... in comparison. If you had shown it to me without the others I would have thought is was OK. But not nearly as lovely/as much character as the others. Send it back.

FishfingersAreOK · 05/09/2012 22:45

Oh gosh...have I been really offensive takes shoe out of gob and puts back under console table. If I have v v sorry. [slinks off to bed emotion]

Devora · 05/09/2012 22:57

Grin at Fishfingers.

ladymuckbeth · 05/09/2012 22:58

Grin FishFingersAreMoreThanOK - don't worry, I sit here in temporary smugness because I haven't had an alcoholic drink for 12 days first time in about 20 years that's happened but it's usually me writing stream-of-consciousness posts on MN about random things like hall tables, having inhaled the better part of a bottle of wine on a Wednesday night Grin

Shall phone the legendary JL Customer Services team in the morning...

Harrumph.

Just think [relieved not to have been a shoe eating pratt emotion] you have saved yourself a lot of allan key usage Grin. More time for Wine

oldnewmummy · 05/09/2012 23:53

Love the blue table. Don't like the JL one - a bit boring. Plus I am so over mid-century modern.

ladymuckbeth · 06/09/2012 10:05

Yes, oldnew me too... not that I've ever gone down that road, but it's the kind of thing that always looks good in the magazines but I fear would look utterly shite in my house.

Loop mirror arriving today. Phoned about the blue table and may now have missed the deadline for Nov delivery; waiting to hear. But I guess my next step is to return the JL box...

Glad I asked now :)

OP posts:
ladymuckbeth · 06/09/2012 15:40

Loop mirror is here, love it, beautifully made and good value IMO. Also loving the vibrant yellow strap and waiting to hear from manufacturer in China as to when I could get teal table made.

JL collecting table tomorrow - hurrah! :)

stealthsquiggle · 06/09/2012 15:58

OP - try these people for chinese antique tables - there are some which look similar to your blue one - I bought DH a Japanese tansu from there and can't recommend them highly enough (I need want a fair proportion of the stuff in their warehouse)

ladymuckbeth · 06/09/2012 20:40

Thanks stealth - their stuff looks lovely; wish I was a bit closer to the showroom. Are they similarly priced to Orchid?
