Can I "customise" kitchen worktops?

We rent a house that we love, but it has the most awful 1980s kitchen with horrible 'marble' effect melamine worktops and mismatched 'marble' effect unit doors.

They recently replaced the grim 80s electric oven for a new one and it has inspired me to want to give the kitchen a makeover, but I was wondering if there was anything I could do about the worktops? We don't want to replace them but I wondered if there was such a thing as a stick-on vinyl worktop covering that is hardwearing, that we could cover the awful worktops in. It would need to be wipe clean and able to withstand liquid. Again, something to this effect may work on the unit doors, or is painting over melamine an option for those?

ANYTHING we could do would be an improvement, it really is shocking.

I don't think painting over a worktop would last very long. You can buy sticky back plastic rolls in places like b&q in wood and metal effect finish - that might do the job - you'd need to be very careful applying it though, a two-person job with one person peeling and the other wiping all the air bubbles out.
