Moving to Doncaster - HELP!

GoldMedalInScrabble · 03/09/2012 12:38

Hi,

Sorry if this isn't in the correct place. We are currently in Berkshire but will hopefully be moving to the Doncaster area in January if all goes to plan (due to DH's work).

However neither of us know the area (the closest I've been is the Yorkshire Dales!) so any help would be gratefully received.

What areas should we be looking at? DH will be working in the town centre and wants a fairly short commute - no more than say 30 minutes. We have a budget of £600,000 max. and need 4 bedrooms, though would like 5, with a decent garden.

We also need schoools for our 4 DC (9, 6, 2 and 6 months) so any recommendations for good schools (state or private) would be helpful.

Also what is the area like? Are there lots of things for families/young children to do?

TIA Smile

Also avoid Highfields.

RagingDull · 10/09/2012 14:19

i work this area - i would look at tickhill too. Avoid like the plague certain areas like thorne, moorends, stainforth and that area -(Howden is lovely - i live a stones throw from howden and i commute daily to rotherham - its a very easy run - 30 mins up the M18, Doncaster is closer than that but traffic is bad at rush hour and i dont usually have that problem as i dont work at conventional times,)
i was quite surprised when i started work there at how lovely some of the outlaying villages are around rotherham and doncaster. Just do research carefully, because some areas are not so nice.

Hi OP
I live just outside Doncaster in Rotherham.

Braithwell is lovely - small village, 2 pubs, tea rooms, 2 garden centre and a v small deli.
Bawtry is nice with much more going on.
Tickhill is lovely too - we go to feed the ducks at the mill pond there. There are pubs, art gallery type shops, gift shops. If I could stand to move my kids and leave my home town I'd love to live there.

Wickersley in Rotherham is a sort after location close to junction 1 M18 and within 30 minutes of Doncaster. Wickersley's secondary school is Outstanding as is it's CofE school.

If you want more rural location Firbeck is lovely.

I also like Blyth ( although in Worksop/ notts area), it's a beautiful village close to the A1.

Bessacar is also a sort after area, but no idea what it's like. Posh I'd imagine.

The area of South Yorks is a great place to live. We are very friendly people. And it is well placed for commuting.
With A1 M18 and M1 providing great commuter links. Also Doncaster Railway station provides links down the East Coast.

There are poor areas linked to to the industrial history of the area. But You will get the most amazing House for your budget! Smile

600 000 will go a long way. Ive lived all over doncaster and i'm still here. I grew up in Bawtry and hope to get back there 1 day soon! It has a river, woods, boutiques, shops, cafes, bars... Basically everything. Its a 15 min car ride to Doncaster (30 in rush hr). Bawtry Mayflower (primary) and Hayfield (secondary) are great. St. Mary's is a private school in nearby finningley. Theres a new housing estate and old period properties. I'd stick to Bawtry rd side or central. Station rd side is still ok (more my price range :) ). Mainly council but some nice.

Austerfield, misson and finningley village are also lovely but smaller and more rural. Imo tickhill is a bit snobby/retirement. Bessacarr is v.expensive and a bit commuterville.

What are you looking for? Village, busy, rural? What ammeneties will you need?

Doncaster has a lot to offer and is generally alright. Its up and coming. Look forward to welcoming you! Join Doncaster Local then there will be 2 of us Grin

I'd echo everything that Oranges said.
Also, Armthorpe is not a particularly nice area, you're better off sticking with Bawtry or Tickhill if you want somewhere with a few pubs and shops but still has a nice village feel to it.
Good luck with the move!

Hi, I'm looking to move to Doncaster as well in few weeks ...is a new buil area, is Dominion in Balby.....what's your opinion about the place, do they have a medical centre and how helpful are they, what about a vet close to Balby?!.....any advise, please....thank you

Veterinari · 03/11/2016 22:32

You'd be better off staying a new thread rather than reactivating a zombie thread
Most people will respond to the OP rather than your post

Hi there I am in Doncaster!!

Nice budget for a house you will have no probs.

Bawtry is lovely as a little town nice cafe culture etc. School good I think, (mayflower).

Tickihill really is THE Doncaster suberb, there are two primaries (st Mary's and Estfeld), estfeld is v popular so you need to be near (very)

Wadworth is nice too, school requires improvement but lovely village primary
.

Secondary schools - hayfield and hall cross. Private = hill house near finningley.

Auckley, finningley, Cantley and bessacarr all lovely too, nearer airport but Bawtry and Tickhill have more going on.

Pm me if you need more info - my DC and 9&5

legotits · 03/11/2016 23:11

For 600k you can take your pick.

A good view and decent outdoor space should go on the pros.

You'd be surprised how nice it is.

umizoomi · 03/11/2016 23:15

Just realised you reactivated this thread and are talking about Dominion/Carr Lodge.

I wouldn't because I hate the houses and it's a flood plain. I also think it's over priced.

I live near Tesco and I think it's better there.

Edwina05 · 04/11/2016 11:25

Really....nobody can give an advise about Dominion, Balby, the new houses there?!
Out of that they are overpriced .....is it really a flood risk area?!
No I don't have half a million to spend on a house.....so ....a simple me can't have an answer about the Balby area?!

Poocatcherchampion · 04/11/2016 16:10

Er - start your own thread then as advised?

umizoomi · 04/11/2016 22:06

I don't understand your post

Go have a look. The houses are close together and expensive. Yes, a flood risk.

A fair way (car drive) from a vet but bear Tesco, Morrisons And a school/pub/small shops that are on the adjacent estate, Woodfield Plantation

5OBalesofHay · 04/11/2016 22:10

Look at Retford it is a lovely market town

umizoomi · 04/11/2016 22:11

Balby is a pretty big suburb of Doncaster but Dominion is much on the edge of balby.

There is no vet, medical centre anything at Dominion other than new houses

kitkat6 · 07/11/2016 15:25

Isle of axholme is nice, haxey and westwoodside are in catchment for the local grammar and state primaries are good. Epworth is lovely town but out of the catchment are and the local school is ok. Gringley on the hill, Everton is very rural I.e. No local shop. Bawtry is very nice but expensive for the area. Westwoodside is my personal favourite village with some lovely houses

There is already post about Moving to Doncaster started some years ago, but I thought to take comments from people who have any good and bad experinecs as I am trying to find a place in around Doncaster within 20 mile radius or 30 minutes drive, The main concern for me is to find primary and secondary school for my 9 years daughter, and peaceful community life. I could see from past posts Tickhill, Bawtry are some of the desirable locations, is it still the same?
