Doing up a 10 year old boys bedroom - ideas??

Doing up my (almost) 10 yrs old DS's bed room. Looking for some help and inspiration on what to do, colour-wise and decor-wise with a small budget! His room still looks like a room for a much younger boy and needs some updating. We have an Ikea nearby so thats an option. Would be grateful for any ideas as I'm hopeless!! I can change carpet, curtains, lighting, bed linen and re-paint walls! Typical energetic 10 year old boy, loves all sport, soccer, harry potter, etc etc. Any ideas very gratefully received!!

My 11 year old basically has an adult room which is updated every couple of years or so by changing the colour of the wall and the posters on his wall. His bed has a silver frame, his drawers is a white Ikea one and his bedding is stripy so could be mistaken for someone older.

His current posters are a computer games one and a car.

Thanks crazygracie - good suggestions!

mines 11 going on 3 some days and going on 16 others so itas difficult. without getting into 'themed' rooms that he'll prob grow out of soon. mine has 2 light grey walls, one darker grey and the other wall has pinboards painted greys blacks and silvers and put all over wall so it looks like panneling, and he puts up whatever posters he wants to there. curatins and bedding are greys and london scenes with splashes of red to give some colour to all the shades of grey. Its easy to 'blue' a room typical for boys but seems so cliched, so between him and I we came up with the greys and silvers and you could always do 1 wall in a block colour like blue, green, red or whatever. thatll last him thru 11 to late teens i should think.

Thanks Thunderbird5 - thats exactly what I'm looking for I think! Some great suggestions there and thank you so much! I dont want a cliched "blue for a boy room", which I think he would grow out of farily quickly now anyway, and introducing a colour like red on one of the walls is a great idea!

I've got a nearly 12 yr old and we are just planning his new room. We have decided on black and grey with yellow accents. Quite industrial/city looking. Works well with his Lego and knex models and car posters etc. He wanted a full on Arsenal themed room, but I showed him this and he loves it. We've seen some 'grafitti' style wallpaper which he is begging me to use on one wall.

happy2bhomely - Where did you see the graffiti wallpaper?

You could try a blackboard on one wall instead of graffiti paper. Some friends have got one their kitchen and it looks great. Also got sent this from farrow and ball that has a seaside theme idea for a boys room, stripes may be a bit much though. www.farrow-ball.com/summer-schemes/content/fcp-content?id=0x9ee6755330916ad8758d159147adae23.41.79987&utm_source=AugustUKenewsletter&utm_medium=emailnews&utm_campaign=Augustenews#boyishbedroom

If you want a focal point you can get some excellent sport-themed wall decals for around £20 for a 4' x 3' design on ebay etc

There are some naff ones on there too but some are excellent and really striking especially some of the BMX, skateboarding, football ones
