Can you paint bathroom tiles?

We're just about to move into a really crap rental property in France and the bathrooms are really old, with grubby grout and naff coloured tiles (can you tell how enthusiastic I am about this move?!)

I was looking at YouTube clips on how to paint tiles but one of them mentioned it's not a good idea to paint bathroom tiles as you cannot then use anything abrasive on them - ie. most cream bathroom cleaners.

Does anyone have experience of painting bathroom tiles? Does it work well or does it just look naff? Should I just try my best to clean up the grout or maybe re-grout to get it looking good?

I have posted pics of the bathrooms in question - if anyone has any styling tips I'd be very grateful!!!

Yes you can buy special tile paint but it looked a bit naff. We couldnt paint without leaving brush marks

Thanks mumnosGOLDisbest I thought that might be the case. I've heard you can spray paint it on, but not sure that's available in France and will probably be hideously expensive to rent a spray paint thingy here too.

Not heard of that but would probably be better and maybe cheaper than re-tiling.

i painted my bathroom tiles from a light blue to white - used a small gloss roller and no marks - used ronseal one coat tile paint but it did need 2 coats
it will do until i can afford to redo the bathroom next year
