Narrow table tips?

We need a new dining table- something fairly substantial, that seats 6 and extends. We want a wooden one in a fairly plain design, ideally not self assembly but a bit more robust. BUT our dining space is narrow and a 3ft/90cm wide table is too much. Any ideas for sellers of tables that might have some narrower models?

Bump! Anyone know good table places?

Someone MUST know where to look for tables, surely?! You're the experts in here.

No idea but it could be useful so bumping for you!

bumbez · 07/08/2012 08:21

I don't know either but could you get one made by a local carpenter?

PhoneyMEDALWINNER · 07/08/2012 08:29

Sorry spent a while looking for place who made ours but looks like out of business Sad

Recommend trying local carpenter as suggested already

MillieMummy · 07/08/2012 08:39

Sorry, no help with a narrow table but empathising with you on the lack of 'smaller' furniture available on the market.

I have been looking for a small oak TV stand for months; think furniture makers assume that we all live in huge houses.

Good luck in finding a narrow table; I second having one made - I got a carpenter to make a small cupboard for my small downstairs bathroom.

StiffyByng · 08/08/2012 17:08

Thanks for the carpenter suggestion. We have one making bookshelves for us at the moment so I'll see what he suggests.

It IS frustrating! I can find wide extending tables and narrow non-extending tables but the only narrow extending one I can find is an antique on the other side of the country.

There was a VERY thin (french looking) dining table being sold in IKEA last year, it was gorgeous - wrought iron legs, and almost like two long wooden planks along the top.

Ill check their site, and ebay, see if I can find one.

GnocchiNineDoors · 08/08/2012 17:10

Ooops, sorry, it didnt extend, but was very long.

GnocchiNineDoors · 08/08/2012 17:14

<a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=ikea+long+thin+dining+table&start=375&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&rlz=1T4ACAW_en___GB393&tbm=isch&tbnid=7LlQr0dXGdjjmM:&imgrefurl=www.kaboodle.com/broken_washout/future-house.html&docid=8ZDtndhqLoDr5M&imgurl=www.kaboodle.com/hi/img/2/0/0/11a/6/AAAAAkyNIukAAAAAARpsiw.jpg%253Fv%253D1215667470000&w=250&h=250&ei=DpAiUOf6A-em0QWFhICQDA&zoom=1&biw=1366&bih=618" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this is it

But it's no longer on the IKEA website, but may be on ebay or gumtree or your carpenter could make something similar. I think it seats four down each side.

StiffyByng · 08/08/2012 17:16

Interesting. I'd ideally like to avoid Ikea though because every table I've ever had from there wobbles and it drives me mad! I'd love a really chunky but narrow table and probably therein lies my downfall.

I had one made and I love it! Its really long and narrow 3 scaffold boards deep which is about 75cm but 9ft long so seats lots of people but takes up very little room. The boards are bleached and waxed so very light and the legs are farrow and ball french grey. With chairs tucked under it takes up very little room.I might have a picture will look x

noddyholder · 08/08/2012 17:17

There are a few pictures of it on my profile

StiffyByng · 08/08/2012 17:23

Ooh, Noddy, I like. If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost?

Another thought I have is that what would be good is a long form table with benches, like they have in institutional dining halls. This sort of thing:

Yes thats what we planned but when it was done the chairs I had tucked under and I kept them. It cost about 170-200 i think. Local carpenter made it. Very simple shape. I am forever moving and renovating and it is one of the things I always take with me! I love it and so do all my friends always makes room feel huge as well

tricot39 · 08/08/2012 18:06

Warning - thread hijack!
Noddy love the table but where did you get that lovely Kilim? Dh has been muttering about getting one and my resistance may just have faltered!

noddyholder · 08/08/2012 18:14

I got it from ebay! There are several that import them and wash them so it was in great condition.9ft x 11ft. Think it was £200 ish

tricot39 · 08/08/2012 20:07

Typical - I swoosh straight to Ebay and all the ones I think might be "possibles" are over a grand :( Might be keeping the existing rug methinks!

noddyholder · 08/08/2012 21:47

this ones nice Ours was an isfahan

jennyjohns · 30/06/2013 13:08

Hi there, just wondering if you ever found a narrow extending dining table? I'm having the same dilemma just now, there is nothing on the market that is suitable. Thanks!
